So, the remarkable news about last week was that there was no news from OpenAI ??; though Elon Musk compensated on that by putting in an appearance.
Musk was reported to be out raising $6bn to build out X.ai and Grok to challenge OpenAI (See more). But, like in every Muskian story, there was a twist to the tale, as he went on X and posted that this was ‘fake news’. There have been several of these yo-yos before, so let’s see whether he raises money or not. On a serious note, Musk has the ability to bring in the right talent to be a big competitor to both OpenAI and 谷歌 , so will be interesting to watch.
苹果 started taking some cautious steps in GenAI, with news reports talking of them integrating it in the next family of iPhones. There has been significant M&A activity by Apple in the AI space also, the latest being that of ?WaveOne, which offers AI-powered video compression. TechRadar has a good report on what to expect from an AI-powered iPhone in 2024.
Meanwhile, 三星电子 has already launched its ‘AI Phone’ powered by its homegrown Galaxy AI. Samsung needs some innovation in its phone lineup desperately as its sales flag, and with Apple having overtaken Samsung to be the No. 1 phone maker, both by value and volume.

谷歌 surprised by suddenly pulling out a rabbit from its hat, with a release of AI powering Google Messages on Android. Expect 2024 being the year of Google attempting to get its AI mojo back.
India’s Krutrim became the first AI unicorn, with the Bhavish Aggarwal led company pulling in a $50mn funding round led my Z47 . Now we have two very well funded startups building India-specific LLMs – Sarvam and Krutrim. Watching this space with interest.
Finally, a bonus and welcome news: Arati Prabhakar , director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has signaled that US and China are actively cooperating on AI Safety. In this geopolitically divided world, the news that the two superpowers of AI are talking to each other to collaborate on reducing AI harm is really good news.
The space is certainly heating up….at warp speed.
