Weekend Warp

Weekend Warp

This week seemed like the week of Nov 30 2022, entirely dominated by news about OpenAI and ChatGPT, as if there was no other Generative AI/LLM company in existence!

So here is the Weekend Warp:

It started off with multimodality being announced within ChatGPT, so now it could respond to spoken words. I tried it myself and it worked! If I was Siri or Alexa, I would be very nervously looking over my shoulder. OpenAI also announced that you could now feed pictures into ChatGPT and it could then prompt it to generate new pictures or learn more about them. The reverse is also true – you can describe a picture and ChatGPT could create your own Monalisa for you. This seemed like a sneak preview of Dall E being integrated into ChatGPT. The picture part does not seemed to be rolled out yet. I think OpenAI has done a pre-emptive strike before the 谷歌 Gemini release.

Then came the news that ChatGPT is now open to the World Wide Web. If you recall, OpenAI closed Web access for ChatGPT after late 2021, and then reportedly extended this line to January 2023. But now it is open to the web, with all the advantages and ills that will bring. Another shot across the bow before Google’s Gemini?

This stupendous valuation raised new ‘bubble’ alarms in the VC world, and LLM sceptic Gary Marcus immediately followed up with a piece on how this was absurd.

BONUS NEWS: What excited me most in this storm of OpenAI news is the possibility of OpenAI collaborating with Jony Ive, the legendary designer of the iPhone and other 苹果 products, on creating a new device which unleashes the true power of Generative AI. Masa Son seems to be in the game here too.
