In technology, there are decades where nothing happens. And then there are weeks where decades happen. In the last few months, technology seems to be moving at warp speed. To make some sense out of this, I pick three to five stories every week which are the most significant of all.
Last week started with an eyepopping number - $86bn. This is the valuation that OpenAI , the maker of ChatGPT, is reportedly seeking for its next round, as well as a secondary to reward employees. With revenues in the region of approx $1bn, this is a 86x of revenue, a valuation which will take it beyond any VC boundary. However, Masa Son and SoftBank Group Corp. might be interested, and Microsoft might double down. Incidentally, another genius stroke by Satya Nadella , Microsoft’s initial investment is already giving it a quantum return.
Jensen Huang of 英伟达 is going beyond his insanely profitable GPUs to building whole ‘AI Factories’ now. NVIDIA and manufacturing powerhouse 富士康 have joined forces to build these AI powered factories, naturally run on Nvidia hardware and software, which will revolutionize the manufacturing landscape bringing out electric cars, and training autonomous vehicles. “A new type of manufacturing has emerged – the production of Intelligence. And the data centres that produce it are AI factories,” said Huang. Interesting to see the GenAI and AI revolution move to the realm of hardware now.

Meanwhile AI legend and OpenAI executive Andrej Karpathy raised quite a few eyebrows, and heart rates, by declaring that he is “building a kind of JARVIS at OpenAI”, thus moving closer to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). To add to the buzz, OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman shared the capabilities of the GPT-4 Voice, where the assistant was able to do business negotiations without much supervision. OpenAI’s stated aim is to build AGI, so the statements are not surprising. However, I remain a sceptic, but the momentum towards AGI seems to be picking up.
The space is certainly heating up….at warp speed.
