Changing Salesforce Field Types: A Visual Guide
Don't go changing field types… if the field contains data. The repercussions could be severe to say the least, especially when it comes to potential data loss. However, there will be times when field types do need to be tweaked.?
Here are some common scenarios for Salesforce Admins to keep in mind:
It’s also worth noting that only custom fields on custom or standard objects can be changed, as there is no option to change standard fields.
The Rise of the Salesforce Admineloper
Admins and developers – two hefty Salesforce roles in their own right, but what happens when you put them together? A hybrid is born!?
While it’s not an official job title, the “admineloper” represents a fusion of two distinct but often overlapping roles. Whether it’s a case of natural career progression or employers expecting ‘more with less’, individuals working to this brief are likely to perform a range of duties that may once have been considered strictly admin or strictly developer.?
As such, an admineloper may be responsible for mapping business processes, managing user data, and maintaining security models in the morning, while writing code and fixing system errors in the afternoon. It’s a varied role, and one that’s not uncommon in smaller teams where capacity can be stretched.?
As you can see, admins are often expected to do far more than org maintenance, and developers’ responsibilities are no longer restricted to designing and implementing new features.?
Ultimate Guide to the Salesforce Ecosystem
Anyone even remotely connected to the world of Salesforce will have come across the term “ecosystem”. But what is this mystical thing/place/being? Is it a what, a where, or even a who? The not-so-simple answer is… it’s a bit of everything!?
The ecosystem is, of course, made up of lots of whos. Salesforce itself employs around 70,000 people around the world. Then there are the countless consultancies, end users, and ISVs working with and around Salesforce – a natural network of companies and individuals that makes up the wider community.?
So, where does this network exist? Again, it lives in a variety of places: official conferences like Dreamforce and TrailblazerDX, community Dreamin’ events and user groups all over the world, online initiatives such as Trailhead, as well as countless Slack channels and LinkedIn conversations – just to name a few!?
Wherever and however you engage with the ecosystem, you’ll find it a supportive, accessible, and extremely active place to be!?

1 年Frankly, I don't even think it should be allowed. Even when it's technically possible, there are certain combinations of field changes that aren't. It's hard to remember when it's allowed or not. On top of that, from a deployment standpoint things become challenging. You also need to watch out for field dependencies (ex: fields referenced as a filter in a report or on a layout, etc.) It's just easier/cleaner/best practice to create new field alongside and migrate the data as painful as that can be sometimes.
