This week we are memorializing SK1 Glenn "Tripp" Darrow 31 July 1962 - 6 May 1995
Glenn’s interest in the Navy began at high school as part of the junior ROTC program. He went to Recruit Training Command in Orlando Florida in 1986. Following recruit training he went to Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, MS where he trained as a Naval Storekeeper. He later volunteered to become a Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Assistant and Naval SCUBA diver and stationed at EOD Mobile Unit (MU) Five, Naval Base Guam detachment Subic Bay, Philippines. He return to started his EOD Technician training in 1990 as part of a new program for EOD Divers. He graduated EOD training in 1991 and took orders to EODMU ELEVEN located at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (Seaplane Base), Oak Harbor Washington his last duty station.
(Provided by Jim Ryan) Glenn and I first met when I joined his class at Dive School In 1990. We were about the same age. Glenn was easy to talk to, he was an intellectual, a deep thinker. I recall spend time discussing politics and world peace with Glenn. I would later find out while writing this Glenn was a member of Mensa. Glenn enjoyed working hard and playing hard. We continued school to Eglin. He was a great golfer. We spent less time together at Eglin but we remained friends. I gave up my orders to the WA to Glenn who wanted to go there - he turned around an traded them for EODMU11 orders. I spoke to Glenn Darrow II (Glenn's Father) on my drive home this past Friday. Glenn's father is 88 and as sharp as they come. He told me Glenn always called every Sunday and ended the call with a proper "I love you dad, and so long." His Dad looks forward to meeting Glenn again; it was a great call and I am glad I made it.
(Provided by Glen Darrow II (His father) Having been in the USMCR for 8 years, I encouraged him to make a career of the USN. He was articulate and focused. Most of all he was a man of faith and loved his Lord Jesus. Every leave when he came home, he would always go to Bible Study and church with me where he was confirmed. He absolutely busted my buttons. He is in the hands of our Lord.

(Provided by Jim Ryan)A quick funny story of some liberty at Dive School. Glenn and I went on a double date. At some point in the evening Glenn and my date clicked. He made a date with her for another time - the word got out - and the cadence at the next sand run went something like - blah blah blah - Darrow’s going out with Ryan’s girl friend lol. Glenn - we were brothers from another mother - and what was mine is yours - RIP bro!
(Provided by Tom Calhoon) Glenn Darrow – Glenn was stationed at MU-5 and MU-11. While at MU-11 he was attached to Detachment 53, a Mine Counter Measures (MCM) Team. While on Det 53, Glenn served as Publications Custodian and Ammo Manager, you knew things were squared away if Glenn was running the show. Det 53 deployed to Guam (MU-5) in support of standing up the MU in Guam. The det had additional trips to Japan and Korea in support on Naval exercises while Glenn was attached to the det. Glen was a good EOD Tech and a good team mate. Glenn was slated to transfer to the MU-11 Para Loft just before his untimely death. In general Glenn was a quiet man and a team player, RIP Brother!
(Provided by Pete Burns) I recall in Thailand Glenn got in the ring with one of the Thai kick boxers. Glen was tuned in, was doing ok until he caught the Thai kick boxer with pretty good punch. It was obvious the Thai fighter was annoyed and holding back - he demonstrated that fact on Glen. Glen came back to the table bruised, grabbed a beer and sat down. He was done..... until someone, no not me, told him he had the guy, shouldn’t have let up. Being Glen he went back in and it was real ugly. That was Glen though. Fun guy. RIP.

Please consider honoring Glenn with a pledge or donation to Challenge - Run2022Miles4EODWF. Glenn is one of several shipmates that is no longer with us today. 22 Veterans commit suicide a day. Intervention and support is the key to changing this. COVID has decimated our support bridge. Let not another shipmate and warrior pass if we can make a difference.
