  • May 12, 1839: T?n Th?t Thuy?t was born on this day in Hu?.? He was the regent and leading mandarin of Emperor T? ??c of Vietnam's Nguy?n dynasty. Thuy?t later led a movement which aimed to restore Vietnamese independence under Emperor Hàm Nghi. He fled to China seeking political refuge after Hàm Nghi's capture by France, and later died in Longzhou, Guangxi.
  • ?May 13, 2012: Antoine Nguy?n V?n Thi?n, a Vietnamese Roman Catholic bishop and the oldest of the Catholic Church at 106 years of age, passed away. He was also one of the last living bishops to have served in South Vietnam.
  • ?May 14, 2006: The United States and Vietnam reach a bilateral agreement-in-principle on Vietnam’s accession to the WTO.
  • ?May 15: In 1995, Vietnam gives the U.S. presidential delegation a batch of documents on missing Americans, later hailed by the Pentagon as most detailed and informative of their kind to date.? In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment convened a hearing on Agent Orange (AO) in Washington, entitled “Our Forgotten Responsibility: What Can We Do to Help Victims of Agent Orange.”??
  • ?May 16, 2022: Ms. Nguy?n Th? Thanh Nh? (Céline Nha Nguyen), a member of the Openasia Group group, successfully conquered Mount Everest at dawn and became the first Vietnamese woman to achieve this incredible climbing feat.
  • ?May 17, 1988:? Karrueche Tran was born.? She is best known for starring as Vivian Johnson in the web series The Bay (2013-2016), for which she won Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Daytime Fiction Program at the 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards. Her win made her the first person of Asian Pacific American descent to win an Emmy for Lead Actress or Actor. She received two additional Daytime Emmy Awards from production credits shared by the entire cast and crew when The Bay won Outstanding Digital Daytime Drama Series in 2016 and 2017. Tran also starred as Virginia Loc on the TNT series Claws.
  • May 18, 1955: Operation Passage to Freedom ends.? This migration involved the evacuation of 310,000 Vietnamese civilians, soldiers, and non-Vietnamese members of the French Army from communist North Vietnam to South Vietnam following the end of the First Indochina War. Also on this date in 1963, the First National Congress of the Vietnam Association for Science and Technology Popularization was convened.? In 2013, the date of May 18th had been selected as the Vietnam's National Science and Technology Day to celebrate the advancements and achievements in science, technology, and innovation in Vietnam.
