1. Fluctuo's Shared Mobility Index 2023

European Shared Mobility Index 2023 Out Now

Fluctuo 's Shared Mobility Index 2023 reveals an evolving landscape with significant growth across Europe's shared mobility sector. With an analysis carried out over 115 European cities, the review showcases a 7% increase in shared vehicles, reaching 930,000, and a remarkable 10% rise in trips, totalling 600 million. Notably, end-user revenue surged by 18% to €2.3 billion. The study, emphasizing a broad spectrum of shared mobility services excluding ride-hailing and long-term rentals, underscores the essential role of shared mobility in fostering cleaner, more livable cities.

Reflecting on the 2023 review, Julien Chamussy , CEO of Fluctuo, expresses optimism for 2024, anticipating the emergence of European champions in the shared mobility space. The consolidation seen in 2023, such as mergers between ShareNow! and Free2move , TIER Mobility and Dott , hints at a maturing market poised for sustainable growth. Chamussy predicts that the upcoming year will see less competition but increased financial solidity and operational control among the remaining players, facilitating the continued expansion of shared mobility services to the benefit of European urban environments.

2. Skyward Bound: The Tough Climb of AAM in 2024

? TNMT

Navigating the 2024 Advanced Air Mobility landscape

The 2024 AAM landscape is undergoing significant transformations, with Joby Aviation and Lilium leading through certification milestones and strategic alliances. However, a concerning trend is the sector's struggle with limited VC funding and short cash runways, challenging many players. The Advanced Air Mobility Readiness Radar underscores the need for sustainable growth strategies amidst these financial constraints, with technology advancements outpacing the funding environment.

The 2024 AAM world is a lot like the wider urban mobility scene but with an extra challenge: it's further away from making it big commercially. This means the AAM companies have to push even harder to find smart partnerships and innovate. It's a tricky path to growth when money's tight and the finish line seems far off.

3. Pedal Power vs. Policy: Navigating Amsterdam's Cycling Future

Monitor Fietstevredenheid 2023

Amsterdam's bike report shows cyclists rate their experience at 7.3 out of 10, appreciating the city's extensive bike paths but highlighting safety concerns. The city's contemplation of automatic speed reductions for e-bikes to improve safety has sparked debate.

A more comprehensive solution might involve expanding bike infrastructure to include lanes for different speeds and form factors of micromobility, ensuring safety without compromising the efficiency of e-bikes along with other forms of micromobility. Wider paths, clear signage, and dedicated traffic signals could also enhance road safety.

Targeting e-bikes while not addressing the faster, heavier cars seems inconsistent for a city known for its innovative urban planning. Amsterdam has the chance to lead in creating an integrated and safe transport environment, accommodating the diverse needs of its residents without losing its essence. A nuanced approach to mobility could sustain Amsterdam's status as a cycling haven, balancing safety with its liberal ethos.

4. How Mixed Fleets Can Revolutionize Urban Deliveries

The hidden costs and benefits of mixed electric fleets in last-mile-logistics

The InnoEnergy study reveals significant financial and environmental benefits of transitioning to mixed fleets of e-cargo bikes and e-vans for deliveries. Companies could see annual savings between €95 to €156 million today, with potential savings reaching up to €554 million by 2030. This approach not only offers a cost-effective solution but also considerably reduces urban congestion and CO2 emissions, proving beneficial for both logistics businesses and city environments.

It's evident that the time for change in urban delivery methods is now. The move towards e-cargo bikes and mixed fleets represents a practical step forward in modernizing city logistics, ensuring operations are both sustainable and efficient. This study serves as a compelling argument for embracing electric mobility solutions, paving the way for greener, more efficient urban transport systems.

5. A Rallying Cry for Urban Mobility Transformation

(E)Mission Zero: Towards Zero-Emission Mobility in European Cities

The Clean Cities Campaign's study on zero-emission urban mobility in Brussels, Madrid, Greater Manchester, Milan, and Warsaw shows a clear path to drastically cutting GHG emissions by 2030. With ambitious policies like vehicle electrification, enhanced cycling infrastructure, and zero-emission zones, cities can achieve reductions between 55% and 94%, inching close to the zero-emission target. The benefits of such transitions—improved air quality, safer roads, and energy savings—far outweigh the costs. It's a rallying call to city leaders and policymakers: The blueprint for sustainable urban transport is here. Pay attention; the clock is ticking.
