THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
September 12, 1969
On September 12, 1969, Major Jerauld R. Gentry of the Air Force Flight Test Center received the Harmon International Aviator’s Trophy for his flights in the Northrop HL-10 lifting body.? Having previously flown the M2-F1 and M2-F2 lifting bodies, Maj Gentry flew the second unpowered flight of the HL-10 lifting body after a long modification period to correct control issues.? He then flew the first powered flight of the HL-10 on 23 October 1968.? Though the rocket failed shortly after firing, it was the first powered flight of a lifting body.? The HL-10 program was a joint effort by the Air Force and NASA and laid the groundwork for the space shuttle’s development.
OUR PEOPLE
Meet Amber Freeman!?
In the sprawling world of infrastructure management, Ms. Amber Freeman stands as a pivotal figure in her role as the Community Planner within the Engineering Division of the 412th Civil Engineer Group. Edwards AFB, situated in California's high desert, is not just a significant installation; it is an epicenter of aerospace testing, and Freeman is at the forefront of planning its future.
?The Department of Defense boasts an impressive portfolio as one of the globe's largest builders, owners, and operators of infrastructure. Managing millions of acres of land and billions of dollars' worth of facilities and infrastructure worldwide, it's a monumental task. As Freeman notes, "our job at the installation level is to develop Master Planning documents that support the Department of Defense planning philosophy." This statement aligns with the directive laid out in the UFC 2-100-01, emphasizing the need for comprehensive planning.
At the heart of this planning is the Edwards AFB Installation Development Plan, a critical document that steers the base's infrastructure development and implementation. This document guides the construction of new buildings, roads, runways, hangars, housing and more. Its overarching goal is to ensure that Edwards remains steadfast as "The Center of the Aerospace Testing Universe."
Freeman's planning team collaborates closely with every Group, Squadron and tenant unit across the installation. Together, they identify immediate and long-term infrastructure challenges and develop strategic solutions. Their work is pivotal in shaping the future of Edwards AFB and its role in advancing aerospace technologies.?
Freeman's passion for her role shines through as she expresses her enthusiasm for being a part of the Planning team and the larger 412th Civil Engineer Group. She exclaims, "it is a very exciting time to live and work at Edwards." This excitement is not unfounded, given the ongoing growth and transformation occurring across the installation.
As Edwards evolves and expands, it's individuals like Freeman who ensure that the infrastructure keeps pace with the demands of the ever-evolving aerospace industry. Her dedication and commitment reflect the spirit of excellence that defines the 412th Civil Engineer Group and the collective vision of Edwards' future.
In conclusion, Freeman's role as a Community Planner within the Engineering Division of the 412th Civil Engineer Group plays a vital part in shaping the future of Edwards. With the Installation Development Plan as their guiding compass, Freeman and her planning team are steadfast in their commitment to ensure that Edwards continues to soar as the "The Center of the Aerospace Testing Universe." Their work embodies the essence of forward-thinking and innovation, setting the stage for a bright and promising future at Edwards.

Rosamond Blvd. Traffic Changes
Team Edwards,
This notice is to inform our teammates of some changes to look for in the traffic patterns on Rosamond Boulevard that should be coming soon.
Over the last five years there have been 135 reported collisions on Rosamond Boulevard between the freeway and Sierra Highway, 36 of which had injuries. 96 of those 135 collisions were at the intersection with Glendower and B Streets.
The primary issue is with drivers trying to make a left turn from uncontrolled side streets onto Rosamond Boulevard. The safest places to do so in that area are at either Sierra Highway or 20th Street where electric traffic signals have been installed.?
In an effort to improve safety at this intersection, traffic delineators will be installed in the near future to prohibit left turns from both Glendower and B Streets onto Rosamond Boulevard.
Be mindful of traffic disruptions as the delineators to discourage left turns onto Rosamond Boulevard from Glendower and B Streets are installed in the coming weeks.

Townhall Q & A's
Will there ever be a chance that the speed limits get raised on installation? Rosamond Blvd?
?It's up to you. As soon as we all reliably start driving the current speed limits, I will actually consider raising the speed limits to something that is more appropriate. We will work with SFS to see if there is a decreasing trend in traffic violations in the near future to make that decision. If we all start complying with the rule now, I will trust that we will comply with a future rule. It's up to you.
?What is the procedure regarding snakes and if you get bit?
?Get to an ambulance and get to the nearest hospital ASAP (911).?There is at least one ambulance crew available to get to you on Edwards. They are within small single?digit minutes of any place in the housing area once you make a call.
?If you need to contact a professional to remove a snake contact the following entities:?CE Helpdesk for pest control at (661) 277-3330, Environmental Management at (661) 277-1401 option 3, or if in base housing contact Mayroad Services at (661) 385-6060 option 1.
?Will there be changes to the telework policies?
?CPO is aware of an updated Telework AFI; however, the HAF Telework Guide with AFMC and AFTC Supplements is still being coordinated. As of 30 May 2023, all employees will utilize the 25 Jan 2022 supplemental guidance for telework implementation.?
