THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

August 3rd, 1982

On 3 August 1982, the YA-10B (a two-seat variant of the A-10?Thunderbolt) began testing for the Single-Seat Night Attack (SSNA) test program at Edwards AFB.?Though Republic-Fairchild (the aircraft’s manufacturer) was trying to sell the Air Force a 2-seat variant for low-level night operations, the Air Force wanted to see if a single pilot could handle these operations.??

?The SSNA program in the YA-10B would answer that question.?The second seat was utilized by a safety observer while the program measured both the system’s performance and the mental workload for the pilot.?Eventually, the Air Force concluded that, while the system needed maturation and key improvements, the 2-seat variant would not be necessary for night missions.?It also decided against ordering the 2-seat version as a trainer.?The one example of this experimental aircraft now sits in front of the Flight Test Museum on base.

Townhall Q & A's

Will there ever be a chance that the speed limits get raised on installation? Rosamond Blvd?

?It's up to you. As soon as we all reliably start driving the current speed limits, I will actually consider raising the speed limits to something that is more appropriate. We will work with SFS to see if there is a decreasing trend in traffic violations in the near future to make that decision. If we all start complying with the rule now, I will trust that we will comply with a future rule. It's up to you.

?What is the procedure regarding snakes and if you get bit?

?Get to an ambulance and get to the nearest hospital ASAP (911).?There is at least one ambulance crew available to get to you on Edwards. They are within small single?digit minutes of any place in the housing area once you make a call.

?If you need to contact a professional to remove a snake contact the following entities:?CE Helpdesk for pest control at (661) 277-3330, Environmental Management at (661) 277-1401 option 3, or if in base housing contact Mayroad Services at (661) 385-6060 option 1.

?Will there be changes to the

telework policies?

?CPO is aware of an updated Telework AFI; however, the HAF Telework

Guide with AFMC and AFTC Supplements is still being coordinated. As of

30 May 2023, all employees will utilize the 25 Jan 2022 supplemental

guidance for telework implementation.?

Need to give credit to test director/ test pilot Jim Fain, Lt General, USAF-retired and my Test Pilot School Classmate (71B). Yours truly was Chief, AF Tactical Requirements shop, which sponsored Jim’s Single Seat Night Attack briefing to the Air Staff….a briefing that was key to funding the highly successful night attack program, Lantrin, flying 10 years later on F-15E’s and F-16’s in Desert Storm. Lantrin literally took the nights away from the enemy.
