Open Kitchen: Ready To Interview

So last week, I launched the 'Brainfood Talent Collective' in an effort to try and connect as many laid off recruiters to new opportunities as possible. Some amazing people immediately signed up including recruiters from Slack, Coinbase, Spotify, Meta and many more from household names. Given the scale of the brainfood community we have here, I'm pretty sure we could rapidly build an amazing database of highly skilled recruiters who would enhance the capabilities of any recruiting department!

However, there are some problems with how I am doing things - quelle surprise - most of which are the result of me being yet again bottle neck in the process. I think I know how to solve this problem so I will share my thinking in today's Open Kitchen so you know state of play as it's being played out.

1. Apply, Approve, Amplify!

No alt text provided for this image

This was generally the idea; one the left candidates would apply to the BTC - an online platform which is essentially the reverse of the Brainfood Jobs Job Board - I would filter and approve, then I would amplify out the list of folks who were 'ready to interview' via this newsletter and Recruiting Brainfood, sent yesterday. There are 25,759 subscribers here, something like 27, 560 on RBF, so a decent way to amplify the availability of people who need it!

2. BTC = BCX (Bad Candidate Experience)

No alt text provided for this image

As ever, you need users to enter into a system before you can really grok what is wrong with it. So I need to specifically thank the early applicants to BTC for being data points on how it isn't working. Two issues here - firstly the application process is too onerous. It's a multi-stage questionnaire which captures essential information, particularly pertaining status, job requirements and so on, but we can see that it will be one of many such forms that job seekers need to fill. Secondly, the approval process places me(!) into a role where I have to make assessments - stuff which I am neither qualified nor have the capacity to do. I think this was initially designed as a method of endorsement, so approved candidates may also carry an undue and unintended recommendation - not good!

3. Two Sided Marketplace

You can get away with BCX if you have sufficient reward at the end of the day - cool companies with relevant opportunities that you want to pursue. Applicants going through an onerous process would not complain if the end result was some great conversations with turned out into viable opportunities. However, there are precisely zero companies in BTC!

No alt text provided for this image

This is sign of the market, or a sign of the inherent challenge of building two sided marketplaces - you need to acquire candidates before you can acquire employers and yet you need employers before you can acquire candidates. I should know this having spent 4 years building two sided marketplaces but I guess I needed a refresher on how difficult this is ??.

I have zero interest in building a two sided marketplace, especially if the pessimistic projections of our economic direction prove to be correct. Employers btw, have an equally onerous application / approval process - something which none but the most motivated employers would undergo.

4. Simplify, Get Out of the Way

No alt text provided for this image

So this is what we're doing going forward. No need to join BTC - it is unnecessary plumbing which increases effort for zero return. The power of brainfood has always been that marketing + fulfilment being the same thing, so that's how we're going to do this going forward. Any recruiters who are interested in being amplified (see point 5 as to how to this looks), simply COMMENT 'ready to interview', along with location / work requirements and desired job title on this thread. You will not only be seen by people reading this, but I will then extract your details and amplify them in next week's TWIR

5. Ready to Interview

Kind of like this....

Hillarie Rose, Recruiter, ex-Google. Based Austin, TX, USA

Hayli Thornhill, Head of Recruiting, ex-BrightHire. Based Raleigh, NC, USA

Tania De la Paz, Senior Talent Acquisition Partner, ex-BRYTER. Based Barcelona, Spain

Octav Buzoianu, Lead Tech Recruiter, ex-Snyk, Based London, UK

Heidi Wassini, Global Director of Talent Acquisition, ex-Vivino. Based Copenhagen, Denmark

etc

I'll create a segment for this called 'Who is Ready to Interview' and will feature the folks who commented the week previously. This will keep going until the comments stop, which would be a great sign that the folks have found the opportunities they need and are off the market.

How does this all sound?

PS: this is going to recruiters / HR / rectech folks only - sorry everyone else, but we need to restrict it to in-community for this initiative

PPS: the above candidates are right now ready to interview, so if you are an employer, just reach out to them.

Anyways, hope this helps. Now out of the kitchen, onto the lounge....

Brainfood Live On Air - Ep182 - True Inclusion: Hiring the Formerly Institutionalised, Fri 25th Nov, 2pm GMT

No alt text provided for this image

I don't think there is a more marginalised group that the formerly institutionalised. Whether it is prison, mental health institution or some other place where an individual is involuntarily held, the outcome is often more than just the time spent 'inside', but a life long stigma which prevents them from rejoining society. Important conversation with two fellows who have each a story to tell. Christine Ng in the co-pilot seat, as we interview James Fellowes, Founder, (Bridge of Hope) and Chance Bleu-Montgomery, Partner Support Manager (Bridge of Hope). I insist you register here folks - you won't regret it!

We're doing another Founders Focus folks - one for those who want to learn leadership lessons for those who know - register here
