Open Kitchen (We're Back!) - In the Spirit of Making U-Turns...

A month ago, I decided to make a few changes on how I was putting together the elements of this newsletter. Open Kitchen had got too long (I felt), distracted everyone from the rest of the community led content and was at constant risk of crashing out due to LinkedIn's horrendously buggy article composer. Today, I'm rolling it back.

The truth is I've found it really hard to get a decent cadence going on Substack, the then new home for Open Kitchen. In the four weeks since I started, I've only managed to get one essay out - Energy Price Inflation Will Formalise 3-2 Hybrid Work - which I thought was pretty good, but it kind of set a standard which I have been unable to reach since. I've since realised something which I should have known already - the style of writing is different, despite the writer being the same, because the medium will always affect the content . On LinkedIn, I can just freestyle this out in one take, whereas on Substack, I found myself doing deeper research, developing narratives and finding evidence to justify the argument. I think I'm keen to do this style, but I'm also keen to freestyle, so Open Kitchen is moving back to this slot, to fulfil its original purpose, which was to literally share with you what I was thinking, as I was thinking it. The Substack I'm going to keep - and probably rename - and do either one of three things with it:

  1. Narratives on Recruitment - my thoughts on what is going on 'out there'. This will basically follow the style set out in the first essay, looking at recruitment phenomena, expounding on a thesis on it and projecting forward what I think might happen, and therefore what we recruiters should be doing about it.
  2. Show Notes from Brainfood Live - probably with the assistance of the transcription service + an AI assistant like Jasper.ai. I need to find a way to crystallise the enormous value shared by our panelists into document form which community members can have access to. How great would it be to have the 5 main points on 'Where Are All The Missing Workers concisely noted down as a takeaway?
  3. Report Summaries - been doing these on as LinkedIn posts and seemingly each time they have gone viral, last two both going over 100,000+ views each. I'm thinking it might be cool to get all the relevant reports we see published about our industry, crunch them down into 'key insights' and blast it out once-per-week on the Substack. Seems do-able and over the course of a year, we might see 52 reports in one place, maybe a useful resource?

Let me know in comments below folks, which one of these 3 do you think would be most valuable, or indeed which combo of them!

So, thanks for sticking around with me on these experiments. I get as much wrong as I get right, and I hope by showing you all that this is the case, that it can lessen the pressure on all of us in some way.

Anyways, enough of this - out of the kitchen, onto the lounge! ??

Prelude Acquired by Calendly

No alt text provided for this image

For many recruiters Calendly was already part of the recruitment stack; very glad to see them upgrade by making a rare acquisition - buying up SF startup Prelude. I had the pleasure of speaking with Prelude CEO Will Laufer on Founders Focus earlier this year - have a watch of this if you want to get a flavour as to what Calendly are buying here. Going to be great to see Prelude tech used by a lot more recruiters worldwide. Read about from Prelude side here, and Calendly here

Moberries Launch Affiliate Program

No alt text provided for this image

So this is interesting from Germany based Talent Marketplace Moberries. Affiliates can get a unique referral link, and up 50% of the placement fee if the referred candidate gets hired through the Moberries platform. Something to know about how Moberries works is that they provide multiple opportunities for silver medalists so the chances of getting referral hired here is likely to be better than most. No brainer, I'd say, so apply here

VideoMyJob Launches Story Feed

Vendor videos are really hard to get right, especially if the vendor is itself a video tech provider. I think our buddies at VideoMyJob have done an amazing job with theirs - introducing their new Story Feed with this humorous explainer. Actually would be a great clip to send your hiring managers regardless of whether you use any product - tells the story about why you need to tell stories to candidates. Worth 84 seconds of your time.

Do Candidates Still Want To Be Interviewed In-Person?, 4 Oct, 12pm

No alt text provided for this image

Interesting premise huh? Intrigued by this discussion, particularly as I don't know the answer at all. My intuition tells me that the assessment procedure should match the working mode as closely as possible, so in-person interview if in-person work environment. But who knows? Maybe Akbar Karenga, Head of Talent (Metafy), Christine Ng, Head of Talent & Communication (Quantum Motion), Steve Jacobs, Talent Acquisition Director (KBRW) and Jayson Darby, Director of Science (Thomas) will be able to tell us! We're going to find out with Pedro Oliveira, Founder, (Talent Protocol), Andy Spence, Founder, (WorkForce Futurist) & Fem Markslag, Head of Talent & People Operations (Cryptio). Register here

How to Detect Candidate Fraud in Remote Interviewing, 17th Oct, 2pm

No alt text provided for this image

Didn't expect this webinar title did you? I've been collecting cases of candidate fraud ever since the remote working revolution took off, because it seems to me that this is one of the under discussed implications of a physically dispersed workforce. My friends at FloCareer say that as high as 10% of all interviews conducted on their platform are flagged as potentially fraudulent, an extraordinary number and perhaps the first time anyone has been able to collect any data on it. I'm with CEO Mehul Bhatt to figure out how recruiters can detect fraud. Register here

Amybeth Quinn joins Electronic Arts as Director, Global Recruiting - Strategic Sourcing, after spending the past 3 years building the sourcing capacity of ServiceNow. It's been a great pleasure getting to know Amybeth - she was one of the first to do the Brainfood Tribune, a story which you can still read here. Needless to say, great hire by EA!

Nico Blier-Silvestre joins DreamCraft Ventures as Head of People & Culture. For those of you who have been following Nico's recent challenges this year (and if not, I highly recommend you do so, particularly if you work in tech startup) will be aware of just how amazingly well he has handled this incredible pressure, not only with great fortitude and no small degree of good humour. Great to see him stay in startup, and now lending his skills on the portfolio side. Well done Nico and lets catch up soon!

Dominic Ludin joins carbonfuture as Chief Growth Officer. It has been a while since Dominic left the recruiting industry but so gr??eat to see him operate at exec level across different types of industry sector. End Notes

Off to the sunny Lisbon this week, and despite my grumblings, am looking forward to visiting one of my favourite cities. Let me know if you're in town or fancy a catch up - I'm based just near Ponte 25 de Abril, and likely will have some time especially on the 6th.

Cheers!
