Open Kitchen: Three Big Changes to Brainfood

Some big changes happening in Brainfood, which I am announcing to you here today.

It's been a pattern of growth that as each channel develops some success, it kind of gets too big as more stuff accrues to it, making the whole thing difficult to consume at one sitting. The approach so far has been to prune and replant the elements which have enough to survive on their own, in a different place, on a different platform. This Week, In Recruiting - where you reading this note right now - is itself an example of prune and replant; all the content here - What's Going On, Who Is Hiring, What's On Offer - was originally integrated into the Recruiting Brainfood Sunday newsletter, before we budded off a year and half ago for it to become it's own thing. We're now up to 22,000 subscribers here, which is pretty close to the 26,000 we have on RBF, and I hope you are getting value from one or either or maybe even both these newsletters.

The time has come to do it again; things are getting too big, and we need to prune and replant.

So some changes coming

1. Brainfood Baked Fresh

No alt text provided for this image

Viewers of Brainfood Live On Air, the Friday video livestream - will know that the structure of the show is in two parts - review of the Recruiting Brainfood newsletter, and then a panel discussion on a recruiting topic of the day. This has served us well for hundreds of episodes but the competition for time between the two elements has become more acute the more we do it, leading us to have to rush through Part 1 in order to give Part 2 enough time, and - to be strictly honest - generally failing to do that. So, we are going to separate the newsletter review into it's own show - Brainfood Baked Fresh!

This is happening every Monday lunchtime at 12.30pm BST, starting today - so you can register here on Crowdcast or attend the LinkedIn Event here. Brainfood Live continues as normal, only now 100% dedicated to the topic, and therefore giving our amazing expert guests more time on screen, something which I think both they and you deserve.

OGs will know that reviewing the newsletter topics was the original purpose of Brainfood Live, so its going to be more discursive and audience participatory. I need to find a way to get more people on screen if they want to comment, so this may end up a LinkedIn Audio Event, a Twitter Space, something on Discord. Right now though, it is Crowdcast + LinkedIn. Let me know what you think!

2. The Big Lists Are Back

These are crowdsourced google sheets which I had stopped maintaining due to Covid-19 changing the game for everyone. Well, now that that game has indeed changed for everyone, it's time for these lists to make a come back. Pretty straight forward how they work - they are an aggregate of what is out there per topic, and open for new additions to be added by you lot. My role is to QA any duplicates or erroneous entries, with the policy of allowing it as default, correct it later.

Each of these lists are at different stages of data cleansing, and I am going to need your help on it. If you see something that isn't there that should be, add it to the bottom of the sheet. If is see something that is there but shouldn't be (defunct, no longer operating, wrong information etc), flag up the erroneous row in the tab for that purpose and I'll get someone to validate. I'll maintain these sheets so bookmark them and share them to whoever you think might get value from them.

3. Open Kitchen Moving To Substack

I haven't fully decided on this but I've noticed that TWIR itself is now getting too big! The Open Kitchen segment is something I enjoy to write, as it's the only original writing I do, but I am beginning to wonder whether this is an indulgence as it may be taking away from the original purpose of TWIR, which was to promote what you were doing. I have a feeling that most of us don't make it to the offers, the jobs, the events, the career moves, because Open Kitchen takes up so much time (avg reading time is around 10 minutes) to read, and we've all got jobs to do.

So if you like my essays on growth, managing a solo business, and unqualified observations on the state of recruitment, subscribe to it here. Chances are, this will come out on Thursday.

This Week, In Recruitment will stay as is - the Monday LinkedIn briefing on what is going on in industry everybody should be more aware of. This might open up more space for us to do other things here such as highlighting individuals, community appeals, vendor updates, changes in employment law etc, but it should actually be smaller and more consumable.

4. Provisional Schedule

Here's my thinking on the provisional schedule

No alt text provided for this image

I don't think it will actually mean more work, only that it gets spread out a little bit throughout the week. And obviously the community can now decide how they wish to connect with this content, dip in and out as you see fit. Most of it will just happen if you're already following me here, connected in some way on social network or have signed up to a newsletter or channel somewhere.

Prune and replant seems to have worked ok so far, so I hope it will continue to prove fruitful for us. What do you think? Let me know if comments below, if you have any thoughts on this!

Anyways, out of the kitchen, onto the lounge ??

The diversification of HR Tech has been one of the great things to witness of the past decade - more tech innovation, from different parts of Europe. That might actually include Recruiting Brainfood, as I need some sort of solution to manager guests panelists for Brainfood Live. Read about the fundraise here

No shame in being dependent on LinkedIn for sourcing, but as everyone else is doing the same searches on the same platforms, you will not achieve any competitive advantage by relying solely on it. I'm moderating a panel with super sourcers Erin Mathew, Senior Recruiter (PayPal), Alla Pavlova, Recruiter (Riot Games) and Aaron Friedman, Co-founder (Pana Partners) on other sourcing techniques and platforms you need to care about. End Notes

I've noticed that 1-2-1 meetings are very different to crowd events, which are different again to small group events. My 1-2-1 tend to be intense yet relaxed, the crowd scenes are intense, great fun but expensive in terms of energy, whilst the small group events tend to involve quite a bit of partying and late nights (rare).

Wonder if anyone else has experienced this pattern? Might do more research on it.
