Is remote work already established at your company??By now we know that offering hybrid and remote working can help companies expand their pool of talent and attract candidates by accommodating greater flexibility.?

Half Your Staff Are Thinking of Leaving – Here’s Why

The bad news? Some 46% of employees in Europe’s small and medium-sized companies plan to look for a new job in the next 12 months. That number alone shows a very clear change in the needs, wants and opportunities at hand for top talent.

Now, onto the good news: We delved into why more and more employees are thinking about quitting their jobs, and what factors would help them stay. Teaming up with the market research institute Opinium, Personio conducted a pan-European study to dig deeper.

In the process, we discovered some eye-opening insights – alongside a host of possible solutions and strategies for organisations to retain their best talent.

Get the insights you need – read our HR study in full.

Personio?is the People Operating System that gives HR teams time to focus on what really matters: people. We’ve helped 6,000+ companies in Europe to automate people processes and free up time for more strategic work, enabling HR to go beyond HR.

Open Kitchen:?Summer

How many of us are on holiday right now?

I know a decent percentage of the readers of This Week, In Recruiting are in Europe, and for sure plenty of people have already left the big cities to spend time on the beaches or in the country. Pretty certain a lot of our North America readers are on holiday too. I kind of 'holiday in reverse' as the traveling for me this year - and in the years pre-pandemic - tend to be quite intensive and work centred so extended time at home HQ when everyone else is away becomes a welcome time to relax.

It's also a decent time to work on longer term projects, stuff that the busyness of business-as-usual usually prevents from being done. So for the next 6 weeks where I'll be focusing on the following:

1. Write e-Book

Artificial deadline for 'end of July' has already been set for this - plan is to write an e-book aimed improving operational efficiency of in-house talent acquisition teams, synthesising the learnings gained from 4 years of Brainfood Live panel discussions (over 160 of them!) and nearly 6 years of Recruiting Brainfood newsletters.

I'm going to adopt the Stephen King approach and just batter out a chapter a day every morning in rough fashion, and then re-write once the 15 or so chapters is in. Some of those chapters will no doubt end up being Open Kitchen segments, though I can see I am already running out of time to get them in ??. Be cool to know what your composition technique is - I feel that writing is both art and science, unified by the common requirement to simply 'do the work'.

2. Prepare Half a Dozen Talks

There is a ton of travel already happening from September. Already confirmed is Gothenburg, Gdansk, Milan and Madrid. In October there is Budapest - maybe Sarajevo, maybe Athens - before Berlin again in November. Somewhere in between might also be San Francisco, but I get the feeling it might already be too much.

No alt text provided for this image

I'm conscious of the carbon cost but I want to make sure that I am not remote to the community members who live in different places in the world. These destinations are decided by invitation from local community organisers who want to hold a recruiting event. We gain a great deal from in-person events and I want to support these initiatives and make sure these are a success, especially as they are often for the first time since the onset of pandemic. So, I'm going to give a talk at these places, so that's my second project - researching talks to deliver for these communities.

3. Close out 2023 Sponsorship

My business is entirely supported by sponsorship; this is the 'Tim Ferris' approach, as I feel that do subscriptions would mean dividing the audience between those who can / would pay vs those who can't / won't pay. This would further narrow of the audience to the economically well off, as well as orientate further to the Global North, and at the expense of the Global South, where in fact the majority of recruitment actually happens.

No alt text provided for this image

So my operating expenses are covered by sponsors - usually recruitment technology companies who are keen to build brand awareness with the brainfood audience. Thankfully, this doesn't require a lot of selling as a) I'm cheap and b) the sponsors usually are already subscribers, so that the 'marketing' is done by the fulfilment. This incidental dual purposing is probably one of the main strengths of Recruiting Brainfood, enabling focus on quality content with no need to compromise for sales. Anyways, I only started last Wednesday and already 1 of the 4 channels is sold out for 2023, another is 50% gone so this should be wrapped in a couple weeks.

4. Set up a New Channel

Cheap is mitigated by More. Diversifying media platforms or channels is a risk mitigation strategy (can't be blasted off everything), a long term audience growth strategy (unique discovery of one from the other) and a revenue optimisation strategy (more channels = more sponsors = more revenue).

It's also an opportunity to create more spaces where interesting things can happen. One of things I've learned from audience building is that once people have got used a certain thing, you have got to keep delivering that thing. That the newsletters, podcasts, livestreams all follow a pattern is a form of psychological assurance for the audience. It's like having watching your favourite game show contestant say their catch phrase. Somehow makes us feel a bit better about the universe. That consistency of format needs to be maintained but it also acts as a constraint on innovation - what if we want to do something outside of the frame? For brainfood, that means a new channel, rather than messing around with an old.

No alt text provided for this image

There are three potential new channels which I am thinking about next year - YouTube, Substack and Discord. I'll only do one of these and I am thinking it is likely to be Substack (maybe do 'report crunch' weekly, you might have seen a few of these on posted on LinkedIn, or maybe show notes for Brainfood Live) or get started on Discord (maybe a conversational space where community members can virtually meet w/o me being a bottle neck). Anyways, let me know what you think would be most valuable or interesting to do!

5. Operational Efficiency

If No4 is going to happen, I'm going to have to secure significant operational efficiency gains. Right now, I'm pretty much close to maxed out, especially with episodic interrupts like traveling (see No3) or going out too much (i.e this weekend ??). There's a ton of stuff I need to do better, from invoicing, to cash collection, to data enrichment, to presentational design, to the logistics of travel and to content production and delivery.

I have support but it might be time to get someone in to help, especially as there is stuff that is already being left on the table (i.e have you seen the state of the website?), not to say my failure to do anything on audience growth, being reliant purely on word-of-mouth and subscriber / viewer advocacy. Whilst I appreciate the amazing community support, its kind of like relying on referrals to do all your hiring - its definitely not making use of all the available options. So maybe that is where I've got to start first - expanding capacity by getting in some support! Let me know if you know of what that role might look like, cos I don't have a clue ??

Anyways, that's whats happening with me over the next 6 weeks. Now out of the kitchen, onto the lounge or sun lounger depending on where you're at.

End Notes

Apparently going to be hottest day ever recorded in the UK today, up to 41C. This is super hot above-mediterranean norms. I've got a dentist appointment in an hour, so will be walking about in this - probably not a good idea, no matter how much of a sun seeker you might be.

Take care today folks, bring water - and - keep an eye out for the animals out there. This type of temperature is too hot for dogs, birds and the rest, so put out some dish of water if you can.

Laters!

Can't wait to talk about the 4-day work week! You even motivated me to finally translate our website (still in progress but some bits are ready) so I can share our rules for asynchronous work. For us, it's an important part of making the 4-day work week work. Because having less time means we need to focus more on productivity. Just going to leave this here in case anyone wants to know more ?? https://supersource.me/en/4-day-work-week-isnt-enough/
