Open Kitchen:?I'm OverScheduled
Most of you know that I'm about to go on trip to Australia in a couple weeks. I will be for most of April, followed then by traveling to Germany and Spain in May and June respectively. Pre-Covid these would be routine journeys for me to make, but it's clear that in the intervening two years since pandemic, that I have reconfigured my life entirely around the base case of always being at home - and this is now causing problems.
Reflecting on this, I thought it would be fun to share with you what my routine looks like on a day to day basis throughout a normal week, so that you can help spot where the problem lies when traveling starts to happen again ??
Monday - Write Open Kitchen
This essay genuinely is written in-the-moment, on the day. I do think it about it over the weekend, but generally don't write a word until Monday morning. The rationale is so that whatever is written in this segment is a genuine view as to what I'm thinking / doing as close to real time as possible. If you spend too much time over drafting, you will be spending too much time over thinking and likely, end up washing out the nutrients from of your content. All things here are meant to be brainfood after all.
The corollary to this is that there is some pressure, and not a great deal of flexibility. I need to be at home, at desk and focused on Monday AM.
Tuesday - this is new Weekend + CRM stuff
Have you ever ran or worked in a restaurant? If you have you know that Tuesday is usually the day off. It's too early in the week for folks to go out and celebrate anything and it's not Monday, where you have to go and get ready for the rest of the week. Same with Brainfood - Tuesday is the emptiest today in terms of hard commitments and I strive to keep in free so I'm able to do something other than synthesising recruitment. If I have to work extra hours for whatever reason, Tuesday is the day where I'm going to have most flex.
I do however, spend some time on Tuesday doing some CRM type stuff - sending a check up email to the subscribers to subscribed a week ago, a follow up for the folks who signed up a month ago and an introduction to the Brainfood Larder to the folks who signed up 2 months ago etc.
As any newsletter writer or audience builder will tell you, it is important to talk with your community outside of the main channel itself. This is especially if that channel is predominantly a one way street. It is only through this dialogue are you going to get the community feedback you need to improve the offering. Talking to people is also a great way of generating new ideas (who knew), so essential for creativity, new initiatives and to discover early resonance for future problems in industry.
Wednesday - Founder's Focus + Brainfood Live Analytics Mailer
Two things happen on Wednesday - new(ish) show called 'Founder's Focus', where I spend time interviewing recruitment technology founders and leaders on what they have learned on their journey in building a disruptive business in today's market. There's actually a double header this week, as this is one of the shows where I want to flexible to timezone with folks who are likely to be most busy in their work.
Wednesday is also the day when I send the Analytics mailer to the people who registered on last Friday's Brainfood Live. This is a follow up email in which I thank the viewers for attending, share the bio's and links of the guests and share the analytics of the show in an earlier manifestation of the whole 'Open Kitchen' philosophy.
Thursday - Start Building Sunday RBF, Phase 1
I am constantly collating information throughout the week, sourced from being in the centre of where information flows thickest. You can call this is a rabbit-hole, but I prefer the metaphor of a Grizzly Bear in salmon season finding a good spot on a flowing river - not actively doing much, just ready to pounce when a nice fish swims on by. This is the reason why I use Revue as the newsletter builder, as it is optimised for curation not creation.
So I am collecting stuff throughout the week, but I am not deciding what goes into Sunday until Thursday - enough of the week has gone by for topical content to go in, and there will be enough collated so that a newsletter can be built. This is the day where most of the reading will take place, and the vast majority of the pieces will either not make the cut or be returned to queue, usually for reasons of balance across topics. e.g. you don't want to do an entire newsletter on DEIB, you break up the great pieces and spread them out of consecutive weeks.
Friday - Brainfood Live + Post Prod The Recruiting Brainfood Podcast
Friday mornings I basically clean my apartment. I have 11 x aquariums which need minimal maintenance but they does require some, especially if you want to keep them looking aesthetically ok. Once I have done this (takes about 2 hours), you need to clean the apartment, because guess what animals don't cooperate and mess gets everywhere (takes another 1 hour). I'm pretty much at lunch at this point so I'll be prepping that, eating it and then setting things up in order be on air by 2pm.
Broadcast usually takes 1 hour, post production of the audio to convert into The Recruiting Brainfood Podcast takes maybe another 1 hour. At this point, it is end of the week for most people, and so I go and have beer in the bath.
Saturday - Complete Building Sunday RBF, Phase 2
Saturday is a good day because it is basically writing the Sunday newsletter. If I've done Thursday properly, the raw material in the form of 20 or so content pieces will already in there, what I've got to do now is re-read them, make observations and commentary, and link it up to either the authors of the piece or the brainfooders who had shared the piece with me. This shouldn't take that long to do, maybe a couple hours Saturday morning.
I am also beginning the process of building the second half of this newsletter - This Week, In Recruiting. Notice all the community news stuff that happens about Open Kitchen? Its a lot of stuff, and whilst most of it doesn't not require huge cognitive load - I'm basically sharing news, updates, events, jobs etc - it does take some time. So maybe the rest of the afternoon.
Sunday - Send completed RBF + Think about Open Kitchen
RBF goes out 7.30am every Sunday. It's not really 'job done' at this point because guess what? When you send email to tens of thousands of people, you get a fair amount of replies ??. This is welcome and much encouraged as feedback and interaction is critical in informing how the newsletter can improve and what areas of support are needed next. Additionally, there is a lot of community support for the newsletter via sharing it or the articles found in it on social networks online. The least I can do here is recognise and support this amplification. Finally, there is a ton of stuff to do on the technical side of email - monitoring spam reports, removing subscribers who are on redundant emails and so on.
This basically takes it up to lunch and I don't spend too much time rest-of-the-day on anything else bar chill-out. I do try and keep mind clear so I can create space for self reflection on Open Kitchen next day.
What does this mean?
Rather unwittingly, in the past two years, I have allowed rigidity to replace agility, which, for a one person outfit, is something of an achievement. Anyways, I hope to figure this out in the next couple weeks. You'll probably find out at the same time as I do whether I have managed it or not ??
Out of the kitchen, into the lounge ??

End Notes
I was very glad to catch some #tru action last week - we've missed this type of 'recruiting unconference', especially in the digital space where peer-to-peer interaction is the core of the experience, rather than watching someone's screen as they present a slide deck.
If I manage to create more space in my diary, I wonder whether you lot would be interested in doing something like this - a regular, virtual meet up, using a tool like remo.co. I was thinking Twitter Spaces too but I am not sure if enough of us are on it there.
Let me know what you think, comment below, let me know
