Open Kitchen: Don't Know What To Do Or Think

I have been depressed these past several days.

The War in Ukraine has weighed heavily on my mind and I'd be lying to you if I said that I have been able to think about anything else. I've made my position clear in Recruiting Brainfood yesterday and the most urgent need right now is to supply whatever help we can to support the people of Ukraine. As the readership of TWIR is predominantly recruiters & HR people, this resource HR for Ukraine might be most immediately useful for you to review.

I won't pretend that I am able to conduct business as usual, so I will just share what I am thinking as I am thinking it.

1. 'Juche for Everyone'

No alt text provided for this image

My old boss Azeem Azhar used this phrase his newsletter Exponential View last week. Juche is the North Korean theory of self sufficiency, a policy adopted by the country due to political isolation and in response to decades long economic blockade. You can't rely on international trade or transaction because foreign powers hostile to your country control the bureaucracy that make those transactions happen. Incidentally, John Redwood MP seems to be - I think unbeknownst to him - as exponent of a UK Juche, on this basis.

The economic sanctions applied to Russia over the past few days show us that 'Juche for Everyone' might be the future for more than a few rogue states; never before as a central bank of G20 country been excised from the market in this way and the inevitable collapse of the Russian economy will be noted by national security professionals in every country on the planet. As we have learned during pandemic, there is fragility in being dependent on global systems where you do not control the principal agents who make the decisions in those systems.

Will we see the emergence of alternative payments systems, more payments in kind (I build you a road, you give me some wheat) and greater use of decentralised, ostensibly apolitical systems with state-to-state crypto transactions? It will almost certainly be one of the outcomes of this war, along with a more generalised trend away from trade, and toward in-state power generation, localised manufacturing and food production. The new future, is Juche for Everyone.

2. European Union Unionised

No alt text provided for this image

[South China Morning Post - Olaf Scholz]

The past four days have seen an incredible full heel turn by the European Union. From initially trying to securing sanction carve outs to continue exporting Gucci handbags, to cancelling Nord Stream 2, banning Russian banks from SWIFT and Germany now remilitarising to the tune of $100 Billion a year. Vladimir Putin has achieved something which no EU President or European leader has ever achieved - forcing the EU closer together and getting Germany to abandon its post-WWII pacifism foreign policy.

What will all this mean? Greater political integration surely, with a unified foreign policy. The emergence of the EU army - now with UK Brexited and out of the way - likely to finally happen. Great news for the US, who might be able to finally reduce the load sharing for European security. Bad news for Russia of course and maybe also China too, if the US is released from its European obligations to accelerate its AUKUS pivot to Asia. Problem with wars in a globally connected world, is that a fight in one place, will create distortions that will lead to fights in another.

Elon Musk is right on this - being on a single planet is the ultimate in human fragility. We need to become a multi-planetary species, stat.

3. Leadership in an Informatized Era

No alt text provided for this image

[Володимир Зеленський twitter]

Everyone has been impressed by the President of Ukraine. Turns out being a comedian / actor might in fact be ideal training for a political leader in this informatized era. Volodymyr Zelensky's acuity with modern communication mediums allied with his self evident heroism in the line of fire has galvanised not only the local population but the wider global audience. Would a less visible, less committed leader been able to turn the EU from sideline player to key protagonist? We can probably expect more 'high visibility' leaders in this new era we have crashed into. As we spend more time on front of screens and understand realities through the information curated through them, can we doubt that we will end up supporting the people who appear best in those spaces?

For good or ill, this is the future of politics. Maybe the future of all types of leadership. It changes the criteria of what we think a leader is. Bureaucrat / Managers out, Media / Communicators in.

4. Splinternet

No alt text provided for this image

Already sounds like an old term, coming as it did in the wake of GDPR in 2016. Remember that? Eons ago. The fragmentation of the Internet - into several effectively decoupled internets - accelerated and solidified by war. The purpose and power of propaganda is to mobilise action and there is no question that Ukraine has trounced Russia in this aspect of the war. With reports from within Russia that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are now becoming inaccessible without VPN, the retreat of Russia behind it's own version of the Great Firewall as it seeks to reverse the narrative to the domestic audience, paints a bleak picture of a world where global communications will be increasingly difficult to conduct.

National security concerns of countries who do not conform to the US rules based order are not without merit. No communication platform - outside of those outside of the rule of law - are truly free of political influence from the countries that make them, and even friendly states are attempting to regain 'digital sovereignty ' by the development and promotion of national services built and housed at home.

It remains to be seen whether these projects will succeed or whether there may emerge decentralised communications platforms independent of, and resilient to, any state interference. But even if a Web3 iteration did appear (perhaps some already have) I suspect they would never gain enough traction to emerge from the very margins of information ecosystem.

So we agree that the free exchange of ideas is the only antidote to groupthink. But we might have to get used to the idea that 'mega group think' is the best we can currently achieve.

5. The Sad, Instant Rise of Russophobia

No alt text provided for this image

Let's be clear that the primary victims of this conflict are Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. But in war there are ever more opportunities for more victims to be created. The idea that the average Russian person in diaspora are those most likely to be hostile to Putin is entirely forgotten because these are the Russians who are closest to hand, so they are the ones who must become targets for vicarious fury. It's sad to witness calls to expel Russian citizens from these countries by political leaders without any proof of malfeasance.

I guess this is human nature, but disturbing to witness how quickly we can come to denigrate members of an entire nationality or ethnicity because of the actions of likely few very of their number. Same thing happened in Japanese internment camps which we are apparently deeply sorry for now, or the anti-Islamic (really anti-any-brown-person) backlash post Sept 11 or indeed the Sinophobia we have seen since Covid-19 and the pivot to Asia. The instant suspension of due diligence might be human nature but it is also a moral failing, and it is sad to see it gain widespread, implicit support with such speed. So let me clear once more; my primary concern will be to support my Ukrainian friends who are under such duress. But I will not forget my Russian friends either.

Not sure how this post ends because sh1t keeps happening so I am just going to end it here. Thanks for reading. I will try and muster up some optimism in the next coming days. It's definitely me that needs to get out of this kitchen.

LinkedIn launches Podcast Network

No alt text provided for this image

Lambasted by experienced recruitment podcasters, I actually think this is a pretty big deal. LinkedIn have an enormous professional audience, and no social network is better placed to challenge Spotify / iTunes as the place where people discover professional podcasts. Recruiting Brainfood not amongst this, so I am going to have to proudly play the 'indie' card, but there's no doubt there is going to be some great listens here. For the creators? Insta mega audience. Have a read

Who's Moving?

Salim Hamid moves to Synthesia as Head of Talent, after spending nearly 2 years as Talent Acquisition Manager of the R&D function at Twilio. He's kind of an undercover legend in the startup recruitment game Salim - not one for the blog posts and the podcast appearances, but the recruiters in the game know what he is all about. Fantastic hire for Synthesia.

Allyn Bailey moves to SmartRecruiters as Executive Director of Hiring Success. One of the great thinker-doers in our industry, Allyn has been an important industry contributor to building of sustainable and ethical hiring practices. Looks like perfect fit as Smartian!

Ondrej Prochazka promoted to Global Sourcing Lead at Agoda. It must be over 3 years since you moved to the other side of the world hombre - I am very glad that Bangkok is treating you well! If I could only get myself over there...

Geri Shanahan moves to MongoDB as Campus Recruiter, after spending time in University recruiting roles at PayPal, LinkedIn and PwC. Can't be many recruiters in Europe with this type of enterprise graduate hiring experience. A future guest for Brainfood Live? Let me know if you're up for it Geri.

Melissae Elhajj moves up to Lead Product Designer at HackerRank. Did you know that it was Melissae who designed the Recruiting Brainfood logo? Yes that is right, the brief was 'make me a 2D cartoon but cool'. Somehow, she managed it ??. Congrats on the promotion Melissae - richly deserved!

Aaron Smith joins TravelPerk as Talent Acquisition Manager, after spending time with Cleo, Skyscanner and Zopa. I've known Aaron since those early Zopa days - one of the great pleasures of doing this role is seeing people's career progression like this. Congrats Aaron and enjoy Barcelona

End Notes

There is an entire dimension of this crisis which I have not yet mentioned - there are likely to be many of you who work in HR and TA who have colleagues and team mates in Ukraine. I have no advice to offer and wonder if you do?

Pretty certain none of us have trained for this and but it might be useful to share any know how you might have, if not directly onto the shared documents above, then directly with me so that I can circulate further.

Let me know again, if this is a good idea

Thanks

Hung
