Open Kitchen: 21 Folks to Follow in 2022

Happy New Year Everybody,

It's the first Open Kitchen of the year, so something different for you. In today's convoluted information and media landscape, it has never been more important for each of us to ensure that we have a healthy 'information diet' for the year ahead. Information is food for the brain. And we need to feed it from a wide variety of sources, in small doses, taking care to balance out our meals even with stuff that you don't overly like. We need to be way of over committing to our favourites too, precisely because we already know what we'll be getting.

I am no different from any other consumer, and I want to use this space to highlight some people who I'll be keeping a closer eye on for 2022. I don't agree with everything these folks do or so, nor do I know or endorse every view they hold, but I found that they have each done something to me last year that I remember - they challenged my assumptions, and they changed my mind.

They are all worth a follow, so this space is my introduction to them and how you can get to their best work. In no particular order....

1. Rob Henderson, Writer / Veteran / PhD Candidate

No alt text provided for this image

A student of human psychology, Rob's style is to pick out key parts of papers he reads and communicate the findings in summary form. He has a newsletter, but twitter is where his game is at. You won't agree with everything but you have find a few moments of profundity through following his commentary. Follow on Twitter @robhenderson

2. Sabine Hossenfelder, Theoretical Physicist

No alt text provided for this image

I realised last year that I did not know enough about how the universe worked. I quit the hard sciences at 16, in favour of academic interests in the social sciences and realise now in old age that there are significant gaps, on significant topics in my knowledge. Sabine Hossenfelder is a scientist who happens to also be a natural communicator, and on Youtube, she has her medium. If you ever wanted to know more about Quantum Mechanics or whether Time is actually real, have a watch of her videos. Subscribe on Youtube.

3. Ros Atkins, Journalist

No alt text provided for this image

Has there been a better political commentator last year than Ross Atkins? His direct-to-camera monologues on the issues of the day, delivered with forensic detail and a commitment to exposition is precisely what the world needs in the era of institutional distrust in media. He's on TV but it's his twitter where I mainly come across his work. Follow him at @BBCRosAtkins

4. Lyn Alden, Investment Strategist

No alt text provided for this image

A self taught investor who up until July 2021 still held down a 'real job' as Ops Manager for William J Hughes Technical Centre, Lyn is undoubtedly more well known as an uncannily accurate investment strategist. Her newsletter, started in 2016, pre-dated the substack creator goldrush and is a fascinating read on the history of finance, the role of the USD as the global reserve and of course, Bitcoin. The free stuff is good enough - follow here

5. W. Gyude Moore, Policy Advisor

No alt text provided for this image

A senior policy fellow at the Center for Global Development, Liberia's former Minister of Public Works provides an essential voice in the global debate on African development, which - sadly and unsurprisingly - is dominated by non-African voices. If you care about economic development, DE&I in the global context, follow Moore on Twitter @gyude_moore

6. Sahil Bloom, Investor

No alt text provided for this image

Is Sahil Bloom the master of the twitter thread? I can't think of many others who can construct how-to's like he does. Usually productivity or self improvement threads, Sahil's writing is accessible, humorous, well researched and impactful. Follow on twitter obviously @SahilBloom

7. Naomi Wu, Tech DIY / Fabricator

No alt text provided for this image

Tech tinkerer based in Shenzen, Naomi is well known for fascinating Macgyered solutions, as well as for her 'Sexy Cyborg' aesthetic. Has a large Youtube following, but it's Naomi's twitter is which where it is at - LGBTQ feminist in China, Naomi is intelligent, fierce, well researched and uncompromising. Smart lady - follow on twitter @RealSexyCyborg

8. Venkatesh Rao, Writer

No alt text provided for this image

Editor of the amazing Ribbon Farm newsletter, Venkatesh's writing is divided between high frequency discursive tweets and fantastic long read essays, which more than occasionally deliver the sort of insight which can change your mind on a topic. Had the pleasure of meeting him once, though I can't quite recall where the event was. Ribbon Farm is worth a subscribe, but follow on Twitter is probably more accessible @vgr

9. Steph Smith, Content Creator

No alt text provided for this image

Steph is really providing a live action role play of how to succeed in the creator economy. When we first met, she was doing awesome content for Toptal, but I think we both knew that this was only a step in journey she was going to take. Now a successful author, community builder and creator, her 'acquisition' by Hubspot presages what I think will become a widespread phenomenon - companies hiring influencers with their built-in audiences as a means to further build brand and revenue with that audience. Follow on Twitter @stephsmithio

10. Dr Richard Claydon, Organisational Effectiveness Consultant

No alt text provided for this image

I'm not sure there is a better writer of LinkedIn status updates than Richard Claydon.

The man has mastered the short form essay and his posts unfailingly provide insight as well as the space for further exploration. One of the few on this list that is doing content primarily on LinkedIn, obviously he his a must connect / must follow here.

11. Adam Tooze, Historian

No alt text provided for this image

Economic historian to be more precise, Adam's writing provides the value we often miss in History - connecting events in the past with lessons for the present. Economics impacts politics, culture, society, technology. We need to know more about how these disciplines together describe the same world through different lenses. Great newsletter, subscribe to it here.

12. Chloe S Valdary, Author / Entrepreneur

No alt text provided for this image

Life is complicated and our efforts to simplify it might have short term practical benefits but has medium and long term consequences for the health of our relationships with each other and with society. Chloe S Valdary has the facility of language to be able to communicate challenging positions which encourage debate rather than rancour. It's an essential quality in today's atmosphere in public discourse. Follow on Twitter @cvaldary

13. Kamran Hussain, Recruiter

No alt text provided for this image

One of our own finally makes the list! There are a lot of smart Recruiters on LinkedIn and elsewhere, but I suspect you sort of know who these people are already - they are frequently cited in Recruiting Brainfood already??.

I'm putting Kamran for special mention here because he is unafraid to offer challenging opinions in public and reasonably argue the case for it. I suspect we might disagree more than agree (come to think on it, I think past interactions might be evidence for this!) but I credit him for taking a stand. Follow on LinkedIn

14. Rui Ma, Investor

No alt text provided for this image

Smart, funny, multilingual destroyer of stereotypes, as well as one of the most astute analysts on China tech, economics and politics. There is something about people who have lived and worked professionally in very different countries that gives them a perspective that others ('monoculturists'?) seem to lack. One of my career regrets is that I didn't do any work in Asia-Pac when I the chance. Follow on Twitter @ruima

15. Ethan Mollick, Academic

No alt text provided for this image

I have not seen a more entertaining, high value twitter account that Ethan's. A professor at the Wharton School, Ethan takes on the enormous task of reading unreadable academic research papers before summarising them in digestible tweet form. Someone some make an app that does this, but until that happens, we're dependent on knowledge enthusiasts that Ethan to do the heavy lifting for us. Essential Twitter follow @emollick

16. Caitlin Johnstone, Writer

No alt text provided for this image

Who better to take on Corporatism, Imperialism and Forever War than an Aussie mum from suburban Melbourne? Stumbled across Caitlin's writing middle of last year and was immediately struck by her ability to condense coherent arguments in a 140 character limit with a lyricism few possess. It helps that she is usually incandescent with rage. Wonderful writer, important voice. Follow on twitter @caitoz

17. Eugene Wei, Writer / Investor / Entrepreneur

No alt text provided for this image

Perhaps the best essay on tech I have ever read was Tik Tok and the Sorting Hat by Eugene Wei.

He is an infrequent writer, which can be no surprise given the enormous amount of time that must be required to create the quality of work he produces, but when the essays come, they inerringly hit the mark. Not many people can write 12,000 words on engagement algorithms and make you want to read more.

Got to be a book coming out soon. Subscribe to the newsletter, read the blog.

18. Dorothy Dalton, Consultant

No alt text provided for this image

There are plenty of newsletters on LinkedIn but one of the best is Future Perfect by Dorothy Dalton.

I'm delighted to have made the acquaintance of Dorothy last year - super smart, passionate about the topics that matter and very keen insight which allows her to take new perspectives on topics that might have otherwise been done to death.

Subscribe to the newsletter.

19. Iwan Gulenko, Recruiter

No alt text provided for this image

I've been friends with Iwan for a long time (2016?) but it is only recently that I came to really appreciate his chat on Twitter.

Relentlessly focused on recruiting, Iwan's approach is to openly discuss this modus operandi as he goes about his work as a tech recruiter in Switzerland.

Very much 'on vibe' with the Open Kitchen ethos. It's fascinating, seemingly unfiltered insight into the thinking and doing of the job. Follow on Twitter @iwangulenko

20. Branko Milanovic, Economist

No alt text provided for this image

Lots of economists in this list, and for good reason, as the world is going to turn based on what we make, how we make it, how we move it, and how we use it.

Mainstream positions can be had in mainstream outlets, which is why this is very much an 'indie' list.

Economists don't come more indie than the iconoclastic Branko Milanovic. Twitter is the place, follow him there @BrankoMilan

21. Esther Perel, Psychologist

No alt text provided for this image

Some people have an uncanny ability to explain your problems with a single aphorism. Esther Perel is one of those people, and I feel her observations on relationships - particularly in relationship problems - can be vital for the health of the relationships you really care about. These could be equally with your partner or your client or your boss, your friend or colleague. I wish Esther was as good a distributor as she is a communicator, because there doesn't seem to be any one place where you can see all her stuff, but as I've suggest Twitter almost everyone else here, I'm going with that here. Follow Esther @EstherPerel

Follow any one or all of these people, and I think your information diet will improve. It has improved mine last year. Some of it will not be to your initial taste, but remember that you didn't like coffee or beer the first time you tried it.

Who else might've been on here? Even though I stand in a middle of a lot of information flow, I am conscious of the reality that I see only a fraction of what is out there. Let me know in comment below if you have someone you follow and think that others would benefit from doing so also. Please don't say Joe Rogan ??

Out of the kitchen, onto the lounge.

Who's Moving?

The mighty Jacob Sten Madsen joins Omio as Senior Talent Acquisition Manager, having most recently worked in Senior TA roles at Nielsen and Korn Ferry. I don't think there has been a more consistent advocate for recruiting innovation than Jacob - look forward to following his progress in the new role!

Janet Haas joins LRS in the top role as VP of Talent Acquisition. It's always fascinating to see recruiters join 'real' companies - organisations that do more than knowledge work but actually move and manage physical things. How is recruiting different there? I'd love to know.

Alex Bannyk joins Sezzle as Senior Technical Recruiter, having previously worked in similar tech recruiting roles at Passion.io, Revolut and Wow. Berlin tech scene remains white hot - be interesting to see what the shift to remote does this European metropolitan centres, I think less impact than you might expect compared to Anglo metropolitan centres.

Kieran Jeffrey moves up to Senior Recruiter - Experienced Professionals at McKinsey & Co, Yelizaveta Areshka moves to up to Associate - Experienced Hire at Goldman Sachs, Matt Childs who steps up to Global Head of Talent Acquisition at MindGym and Ian Lee, steps up to Director at Kitopi. Congratulations all and good luck in 2022!

What Are You Doing?

Congratulations to Tabitha Goldstaub who becomes Member of the British Empire in the 2022 New Years Honours. We can say a great deal about the merits / demerits of an archaic honours system, but sometimes they do get it right. CogX has become a critically important driver for technological and cultural innovation in AI, more evidence if you ever needed it on the value of community. Must attend event also, so watch out for it in 2022.

Speaking of events, Martyn Redstone seems to be compiling a list of the key events to attend in 2022. Probably more AI / Conversational Interface focused, but recruiting is never far away where Martyn is concerned, so be sure to register your event with him - either via DM or through a tagged comment below.

Finally, the Bill Boorman is looking for 'track leaders' to lead a round circle conversation in the upcoming 'Zero Zoom' TruLondon. Live action unconference in Eletrowerkz in Islington, London, in February. This is a zero prep, zero pressure opportunity for you to lead a conversation on a topic you care about. It's also a great opportunity to get on the speaker circuit. DM Bill directly or via a tagged comment below

If you are doing something new,?comment below?with what it is and share a link to where you want people to go. Don't forget to @ mention me in it so that I see it

End Notes

Bank Holiday in the UK yesterday, so TWIR coming out a day later than usual. By sheer coincidence this is the second newsletter in the space of 3 weeks which has been posted on Tuesday, with no discernible impact on engagement or view count rates. Maybe a new day for it?

It is of course, terrible practice to use metrics at this time of year to inform marketing strategy, so expect a return to Monday AM after this week ??

Happy New Year everybody - lets keep talking, lets keep learning - all power to you in 2022 ??

Awesome newsletter as always Hung Lee :) I have something that might be a worthy inclusion. We are hosting a webinar on the 13th at 10.30am that I know TA leaders will be interested in. With the work I'm doing for YourGamePlan we focus on supporting students across the UK with things like financial literacy training, mental health and well being support and giving students clarity on their careers. Students that otherwise wouldn't have that support. The webinar is free and about 'Attracting School Leaver and Apprentice Talent in 2022' - We will be sharing stats from 2021 and also discussing our top tips for how to reach students, what's important to them and how as a talent team you can best engage with school leaves and apprentices in the coming year based on the 1000 schools we currently work with across the UK.
