Open Kitchen: What Do Recruiters Want?

It's occurred to me that we've never seriously asked this question.

When we talk about talent attraction, job design ("good work"), employer branding there are certain groups of people we have in mind. Software engineers, data scientists, A+ University graduates. But Recruiters? Our employers seem to have never cared overly much. Recruiters are dime a dozen, hire whenever you wanna because there's loads of us out there. Until there isn't .

It's about time we changed this, so I'm announcing the next 'brainfood brainwave' - probably the last project of the year - an industry wide survey on the motivations of new recruiters when they consider new work opportunities. I'm hoping that this will help employers better answer the question 'what makes a good job for recruiters? And provide some implications on how employers can make their organisations more attractive to the highly skilled, in-demand - which is what we are now.

As ever with Open Kitchen, this is a premature announcement so I'm going to need your help in survey design. Have a look at the following and let me know what you would add or take away....

1. Who should complete the survey?

No alt text provided for this image

I'm thinking the folks we would like to complete this survey should be those whose primary function - or whose job is in a company or department whose primary function - is to support the hiring of people to organisations.

We want to collect information from both third party recruiters and in-house recruiters, as well folks who are working in RPO or embedded recruiting teams. Also, there is an increasingly number of solopreneur recruiters amongst us who often float across these boundaries as they take on different roles - they also belong here and should do the survey.

Note: this includes people whose individual job role may not be directly hiring, but nevertheless work in a recruiting function - i/e recruitment operations, talent analytics, employer branding leads, candidate experience managers etc, as well as people who have now become manager / leader types who no longer operate as individual contributor.

2. What demographic information should we to collect in the survey?

No alt text provided for this image

I want to collect (and anonymise) demographic data from respondents - ethnicity, gender identity, nationality, age - because I hope the size of the dataset might be large enough for us to be able to identify potentially important patterns or trends in how our community thinks about job opportunities. It might also be generally useful for us to have an idea as to make up of our industry, given that we have responsibility for diversity & inclusion in our work.

However, what taxonomy do we use to collect this information? Free text input is optimal for the respondent, but a nightmare for the collector, but there are problems with every classification system I have seen. Do we go with the UK ONS classification above - or does anyone else have some other options we can consider?

3. What specific questions do you want answered in this survey?

No alt text provided for this image

The objective is the better understand how the community thinks about new job opportunities - what is it about a role or organisation which makes recruiters decide to take the zoom call rather than ignore. Do you have any questions which would be good to ask here? - if you do have any ideas, please add them comment below in this thread - and I'll integrate them into the survey.

What & When

I want to complete the survey design by end of the week at the latest, so I can give you all a preview and then start collecting the data asap. I've got 25,000 subs on Recruiting Brainfood, 16,000 on This Week, In Recruiting, 30,000 (mainly recruiter connections) in LinkedIn, so between all of this audience, I am hoping we will be able to collect some valuable data which will better inform employers on how to recruit recruiters. By extension, this should mean that smart employers will start shaping recruiter jobs which are more suited to the type of work we want.

Sound like a good idea? I think so

Anyways, out of the kitchen, onto the lounge ??

REC Report on Jobs - September 2021

No alt text provided for this image

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation jobs report is a monthly pulse survey of UK recruitment agencies - turning into an essential resource for better understanding how the economy is tracking. Placement rate declining despite record vacancy level, attributed to candidate shortage, which in turn is triggering record starting salaries as employers try and respond. Summary report here

Ireland signs up to global corporate tax deal

No alt text provided for this image

Complaints that big tech are 'dodging taxes's were always on weak ground when governments actively competed to attract those big tech firms by offering the lowest corporation tax rates. Pushed by the Biden presidency, 130 OECD countries - with Ireland one of the last holdouts - now agree the global tax minimum of 15%. Interesting to see what impact tax harmonisation + distribution of tech workforce via WFH will do - we should see further reversal of metropolitan agglomeration?

There can't be an enterprise ATS which is not building a significant internal mobility solution. Pretty soon we are going to need to a new term to describe these technology - 'applicant tracking' is already obsolete. Josh Bersin is an evangelist for this trend and been tracking / advocating for these developments harder than most. Here is his verdict
