Open Kitchen: Nobody Can Recruit Recruiters...
Have you ever seen a market quite like this? The demand for skilled recruiters has reached an unprecedented level. When you get to the 'Whose Hiring' segment later on this newsletter you'll see what I mean - I even recorded a Loom on it as I was so stunned at the numbers.
And please note that these are only the jobs specifically requested by you the readers of this LinkedIn newsletter via comment on the previous issue. As many as they are, it can only be a tiny fraction of the overall size of the demand. If you're a recruiter or HR person with tenure in any kind of credible business, chances are you will have already been hit up by rec2recs or direct employers asking 'if you'd be interested in a chat'. These are great times to be a recruiter, but less-than-great times for employers looking to hire recruiters.
What are we going to do about it?
1. Improve Discovery - Brainfood Job Board?
Part of the problem is discovery. According to Irina Shamaeva, there are 2 million people who call themselves 'recruiters' on LinkedIn. That is probably a big enough number to fill a lot of the vacancies we currently have, but connecting job + worker is a discovery problem no one has really solved.
I'm definitely not going to be able to solve it, but probably could do more than I have. My distribution channels are not insignificant (40K on LinkedIn, 25K in Recruiting Brainfood on Sunday, 15K on here, 4K in the FB group, 1.5K on video stream, ?K on the podcasts (no idea) and likely to be highly relevant (almost every one of those numbers being an in-industry professional). However, all of these channels only 'pulse' information - easily missable, hard to retrieve and not at all searchable. Do we need a job board? I really don't want to do one, but I wonder whether it is now a case of 'needs must'. So I've applied for an account at Pallet. If approved, I'll launch it.
2. Make More Recruiters - Recruiter Bootcamp?
When skills shortages are both acute and persistent, the market response will be to try and create more of those skills. We saw this in the first wave of computerisation of the white collar work (rise of Microsoft / Cisco certifications) in the 1990's / early 2000's, then again in the 'software is eating the world' era a decade later, with the rise of the coding bootcamps. Has the time come for a mini-market of 'recruiter bootcamps'? I think I know of one company in the Netherlands doing this (hello Doeke) - is anyone else? Seems like there's an opportunity here, especially considering labour reallocation from sectors (travel, hospitality) most severely damaged by pandemic.
3. Increase Productivity Of Recruiters You Already Have - More Automation?
In late 2020, 74% of surveyed employers anticipated an increase in HR Tech spend through to 2022. In 2021, we seeVC money flooding into HR Tech, especially to business who they feel are solving the challenges of near future workplace. Automation of previously core recruiting tasks - candidate discovery, candidate assessment, interview logistics, interview analytics - all are clear targets for this investment. If we don't find a way to hire more recruiters, the pressure on employers to automate still further can only increase. If this trend plays out, we may look back at we are experiencing now as an extraordinary but temporary peak before we settle down to a market of fewer, better recruiters, equipped with the latest technology to do more work with less.

SmartRecruiters raise $110 Series E round at $1.5 Billion valuation - becoming the latest HR tech unicorn. Money continues to flow into companies building solutions for the challenges of tomorrow - according this IDC forecast, as much as $600 Billion going to be spent future of work technologies in 2021

AI tech developer Veritone acquire PandoLogic in a deal valued at $150 million in cash and equity, in move which will expand Veritone's already diverse portfolio of solutions, but also supercharge Pando's leading position as provider of autonomous recruiting solutions.

Three big pieces of news from Zoom - launch of Zoom Apps Marketplace, Zoom Events to take on Hopin and the acquisition of cloud contact centre provider, Five9 for $14.7 billion in an all-stock transaction.
Zoom very much fitting into the category of 'future of work' business - going for radical diversification from simple video communications software. You have to think about Skype don't you? 10 year start, squandered.

Christine Ng, joins Quantum Motion as Head of Talent & Media, after spending 3 years as Talent Acquisition Partner - Product & Tech, with the Financial Times. Super interesting project to recruiter Integrated Circuit Engineers for one of few (only?) tech companies building a Quantum Computer.
Ann Wilkerson joins eightfold.ai as Enterprise Account Executive, after spending time with organisations such as ERE Media and Monster. Few are better connected in the business than Ann is - great move to one of the most exciting HR tech businesses to come along in recent years. And Happy Birthday Ann ;-)

Torrential rain now in the UK, as we see scenes in London similar to those which we've borne witness to in Belgium / Germany last month and in Henan in China last week. We are making inputs into a complex system which we barely understand and will have to reap the consequences.
