Open Kitchen: 4 Stages of Recruiter AI-Enablement

AI won't replace recruiters, but recruiters who are AI-enabled will replace those who aren't

I don't know who first made that quote but it's already becoming cliche. The pace of AI innovation has been so discombobulating that we are left with no choice other than to fall into consensus that, yes, this is indeed world changing, and we who are swept along with it, will have to adapt.

In my conversations with recruiters, recruiting tech entrepreneurs and tech investors I observe the following stages of adapting to AI. None of these stages are discreet but I think they sketch out the beginnings of a maturity model on where we and you might be on the path to AI enablement.

1. Applied

No alt text provided for this image

This is using the tools as intended, in a non-systematic and non-directed way. Individual recruiters under their own initiative are experimenting with common products like ChatGPT to do things like write job ad copy, produce how-to guides, conduct prospecting or talent mapping, customise outreach messages and the like. I think most of us who have experimented with Generative AI tools (probably still less than 5% of us, I think?) are probably at this stage of using AI. I am. How about you?

2. Augmented

No alt text provided for this image

This is the use of next generation recruiter tools which are integrated with OpenAI API (or similar) to do the application side at much greater efficiency and accuracy. Recruiterbot.ai made by my mate Srin Madapalli might be a great example of the category - an outreach message customiser which can give recruiters a simple 'no training needed' out-of-the-box shortcut to the benefits of Generative AI. If you encounter a new recruiter tool out in the wild with the terms 'AI' in it, chances are it will fall into this category. How many of us are at this stage? Less than 1% I would say.

btw: Srin is look for beta tests on Recruiterbot so if you're up for it, connect with him have a chat and get 2 months for free on this tool when it goes commercial later this year.

3. Automated

No alt text provided for this image

This is the use of multiple applications to execute an entire task. Once configured, the system you've stitched together using an Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) like Zapier can operate at scale and without human monitoring. Marcel van der Meer demonstrated an example of this during a recent Brainfood Live, using OpenAI fetch candidates details from a spreadsheet, having ChatGPT write a customised message which will then be send out via Gmail until the end of the task. How many recruiters are at this level? <1% for sure, this is at theoretical stage for most, even though people like Marcel are already proving concept.

4. Autonomous

No alt text provided for this image

This is moving even further away from the human - using AutoGPT to not only stitch together different applications and tools, but also to recommend the next task and follow up its own recommendation entirely without human input. In the world of 'Agentic AI', the human being is reduced to being simply the customer who wants a solutions and the AI if given sufficient permissions will find a way to execute tasks in order to deliver that solution. Currently in experimental mode but it is experimentation 'out in the wild' as the code is open source and 100K+ developers are looking at it and working on it. How many recruiters are at this stage? Zero, for now.

Interested in your thoughts on this - where do you think you are right now?

Out of the kitchen, onto the lounge ??

Indeed Pause Required PPA

No alt text provided for this image

Changing pricing model is always going to get incumbent customers upset; and when a company the size and scale of Indeed do it, you can believe that the noise level of complaints would be significant. Didn't help that switch meant 'spend overruns' for customers who might suddenly find themselves surged charged for job adverts which 'performed' unexpectedly well. Welcome that Indeed are doing a partial roll back, with customers now able to retain the choice of CPC, though it might not be enough to limit the fall out for those customers who might have been stung with an unexpectedly high bill. SHRM with a really good article on this - read all about it here - and Brainfood mind do something on this story with Indeed soon also, watch this space.

CVWallet Raise £1 Million Seed Round

Great to see the dynamic husband and wife duo Richard and Beverly Collins back in the industry with another innovative product, having exited the previously business to the aforementioned Indeed. Timing is perfect for identity verification software, as the GAI will supercharge the already problematic deepfake genre. Worth keeping an eye on this team and this product. Read all about it here

It's James Driver, formerly Head of the People at businesses such as Bolt, Voi Technology and FreeSpee.

I had the good fortune of bumping into James in a number of in-person events in recent weeks and, having found out that he was also currently interviewing for the next role, made it obvious that I should invite him to participate in the Brainfood Tribune. I asked James 20 Questions. Here are his answers

Jim Miller joins Ashby as VP of People and Talent, after having spent time with FullStory, and most prominently, a decade plus in charge of talent channels at Google. Fascinating opportunity to work in recruiting for a recruiting tech business. Congratulations Jim, let me know how you get on!

Jeff Gerding joins GE Aerospace as Talent Acquisition Leader. Moving to hardware / manufacturing is going to be a smart move as Generative AI eats to software world. I can see a big shift the work, and the workers needed to do it, move from the intangible back to the tangible. Great move Jeff - love to know what you learn about this new space!

Promotions to celebrate - Alan Hiddleston goes up to VP of Sales at Thought Industries, Lauren Tait expands scape at AssessFirst, taking on UK Team and TA responsibilities, Jazsmine Stroulger moves up to Talent Resource and Global Mobility Associate Director at Publicis Groupe and Nico Blier-Silvestri who goes up to Platform Partner at Dreamcraft VC - congratulations all!

George LaRocque is doing his best to keep track of what is going on in the AI space by interviewing HRTech entrepreneurs on how this new class of technologies is influencing the products they build. It promises to be a fascinating series. Get in touch if you want to get interviewed by George.

End Notes

It's another Bank Holiday Monday in the UK - we're for a run of these, and whilst it is an unusual sequence, I think it does show us what a relief it is to have another day onto the weekend. What are the impacts of this extra day of rest - what do you do with it? Might be an interesting discussion to have. Anyways, enjoy the day off, Brainfood never rests!

Best wishes

Hung
