Open Kitchen:?Big Lists, Being Banned on LinkedIn

There's three things on my mind right now and I think I'm not able to choose between them in terms of what to talk about more, so I'm going to go with the first two and leave the third to next week.

Some good news really, and some bad news I think, so here we go ??

1. Big List of Places to Post Jobs (Global)

No alt text provided for this image

There's tons of Big Lists and I'm afraid to say that I have rather neglected most of them apart from the Big List of Events everyone should attend. Folks have been complaining, so I am reviving at least one of these - the Big List of Places to Post Jobs (Global). This has especially become pertinent given that we are now casting a global net for talent, whether that is remote or relocation or whether we make the move of shifting the location of jobs to different parts of the globe.

This is a crowdsourced spreadsheet, so some of the data will need validating, if you find any outdated websites on here, please do let me know I will clean it up. If you have or manage a job board or place to post jobs and this spreadsheet doesn't have it here, please add to the bottom of the spreadsheet and I will merge it in. Going forward, I think I will promote this list in this newsletter on a weekly basis and hopefully give more visibility to those boards which are on there. Hope this helps everybody!

2. Being Banned (on LinkedIn)

Part of the reason why I operate so inefficiently is because I prioritise resiliency.

Basically, I'm on loads of different channels because I don't want to be overly dependent on any one place which can summarily boot me off, disconnect me from the community and potentially end any business I'm doing. So far, I've not ran into any problems but the longer I'm around the social web, the more I realise that it might just be a matter of time.

De-platforming is a form of digital exile and it is a very serious sanction; in the old days, exile from community meant a de facto death sentence, as the condemned was denied protection of the group and themselves ejected from the community safe space into a hostile world where survival alone was slim. To deserve such an sentence, the crime committed must be egregious, and so far beyond any form of restitution for it to be merited.

Hence I was so disappointed to learn that one of the great contributors on this platform has recently been permanently banned from the platform, whilst another has her account temporarily suspended with a warning that a permanent ban is coming if future transgressions occur. Yet another claims that his suspension was simply unannounced and to which he claims to have no case to answer.

Where are we with this?

I think we can all agree that certain actions are beyond the pale - hostility, aggression, threats - no go on here or anywhere else. But we need to be careful not to create such a safe space that we end up muffling the engagements that are sometimes necessary to be had. Do we all just end up like characterless clones, churning out have-a-nice-day happy talk? We can all blame the platform. but we users have also got to accept some responsibility also. Of course we all deserve safe spaces, but we all also have to be prepared to experience edgier conversations, otherwise we turn every engagement into robot speak, the humanity drained out of it for fear of the mighty ban hammer.

Anyways, I'm kind of annoyed at the injustice of some of these bans (we all know of far worse users on LinkedIn!) and will be looking learn more about these individual cases and see what can be done to reverse it, if that is the right course of action to take. If anyone knows how best to go about reversing a ban, let me know

Out of the kitchen, onto the lounge ??

What's in the News?

Plum raise $6 Million

Application of talent assessment technology from talent acquisition and external hiring to talent development and internal mobility, is one of the most important trends happening in the world of work today. I'm surprised more assessment platforms are not jumping on this trend. George Larocque as ever with the scoop.

What's Going On?

Brainfood Live On Air - Ep195 - Recruiter Use Cases for ChatGPT, Ethics and Concerns , Friday 3rd March, 2pm GMT

No alt text provided for this image

I think all of us have had a go at ChatGPT by now. The obvious potential for recruiters to accelerate their productivity has meant that our sector has perhaps embraced it with greater enthusiasm than most. However, the contours of controversy are becoming clearer the more we use it - who owns the training data, what happens to trust, what happens to the web, what happens when it eats itself? All these questions can no longer be avoided, so time to strap in and join us for a debate on the ethics of ChatGPT. We're with Irina Shamaeva , Founder (Brain Gain), Matt Burney, VP (Indeed), Mark Deubel , Recruiter (GitLab) & Tony Fish , Lecturer AI & Ethics (London School of Economics). Can't miss this one folks - register here

Who's Moving?

Kristina Iniguez ?joins SmartThings as Director of Marketing, having previously led the marketing efforts at SHL and Hired. Always a bittersweet moment when great talent leaves the sector but it is probably a good thing that there is more transition between sectors - we're going to learn a lot more other each if we ventured out a little further than our domain now and again. Good luck Kristina!

Monica Ibanez joins Deel as Tech Talent Acquisition Partner, having previously worked in TA at the likes of Personio and Amazon. It's been an almighty tussle in the global payroll space and I wonder whether Deel might be starting to establish a lead in the pack. The winner is genuinely going to be multi-decacorn. Exciting time to be part of the company with the potential like this!

Isabella Cross joins The Economist as Talent Acquisition Manager - Engineering, having previously worked in tech startup / scale ups such as zeroheight, Raylo as well as service providers Kin + Carta and Talentful. Expect more of this type of shift from growth orientation to digital transformation, labour force reallocation going on and mature businesses stand to benefit!

Sergio Gallo joins Pontoon Solutions as Senior Director, Channel Partnerships, having spent the past decade with Recruitics, working his way up from Marketing Coordinator in 2013 to VP Client Services in 2023. Great to see this type of career building can still happen in a single company. And now, time for something new - good luck Sergio ??

Finally, couple of promotions to celebrate - Chad Horne , who goes up to Director, Talent Sourcing EMEA/APJ at ServiceNow and Ondrej Prochazka who goes up to Global Head of Talent Sourcing at Agoda - congratulations both!

What Are You Doing?

Ilja Mitrofanov has launched HRNuggets - a very useful looking online resource for TA / HR folks. It's a searchable website of crowdsourced 'HR Nuggets' which will help make your work more efficient and effective. Seems like something you should bookmark!

Adam Gordon - who most of you might be familiar with as the regular co-host of Brainfood Live On Air - is conducting focus groups with recruiters, recruitment technology entrepreneurs, recruitment marketing and HR folks. Great opportunity to connect with great thinkers and doers - apply here

End Notes

Last day in Hong Kong, flight early tomorrow morning HKT time. Got to say, I have really enjoyed this long period over here. Been pretty chill, mainly staying in village and reconnecting with family after a long period away. Feel good that the 'brainfood rhythm' has not been massively interrupted - helped I think by the fact it has been a chill time.

Back in Blighty tomorrow, then some more traveling on the cards as South Africa next week, followed by events in Amsterdam, Riyadh, Athens maybe, Berlin and more. Need to get back in shape for this!

Hope everyone has a great week ahead

Thanks for the mention, Hung Lee! Super excited for the AI in Recruiting series to kick off on the 16th ?? We have another AI-related event next week that TWIR readers might find interesting if possible to share in next week's edition? On Thurs March 9, Siadhal will sit down with Richard Cho (Former Chief Recruiting Officer at Gem) and Wesley Gilbert (Global Head of TA at On Running) to hear their take on the importance of prioritizing relationship-based recruiting in the midst of the era of AI we're currently in. More info and registration form here: https://www.metaview.ai/events/relationship-based-recruiting Let us know what you think.
