Nigerian Data Protection Commission

This week is National Data Privacy Week. NDPC started this global event with a press conference on Sunday at the Sheraton. The Nigeria Data Protection Commission- NDPC oversees the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023). This week happens to be the flagship of the NDPC's awareness and capacity-building initiatives, which are designed to advance data privacy rights. The theme for this year's Global Privacy Week is "Take control of your data." I believe it's time for things to change and for us to take back control of our digital lives. It is a call to action.

That event already sets the tone for the entire week. I had engaged in a series of essential discussions, including internal meetings to align our objectives. Later in the day, I connected with stakeholders to discuss strategies for bridging the digital divide and ensuring connectivity for underserved areas in the country. This collaborative effort aims to make a positive impact on digital inclusion and accessibility

On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of hosting members of the IEEE, led by Engr. John Adebayo, from the Nigerian Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. They've shown keen interest in partnering to create an IEEE Hub for students, with a focus on developing technical skills and encouraging creative ideas for practical solutions. The prospect of developing innovation and nurturing the talents of our future leaders through this collaboration brings a sense of optimism and excitement for the positive impact it can have on our educational landscape.

After that, I paid a visit to the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, aligning with NIGCOMSAT’s goal to strengthen relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders like the armed forces and security agencies.

One of their mandates that stands out for me is to enhance security on the African continent by promoting a collective defense system through bilateral, sub-regional, and continental cooperation.

Wednesday was a quiet day, but Thursday was exciting. I attended a historic event at the Communication and Digital Economy Complex—Developments in Government. It was great to see different agencies working together to bring digital transformation to our nation. The event, jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy , and Galaxy Backbone Enterprise , provided a platform for technologists and tech enthusiasts in the Nigerian Civil Service to team up and create solutions.

A statement from Minister Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani speech stuck with me:

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

This just goes to show the importance of continuous learning in our ever-changing world.

It was an honor to host Timothy Ashong DG of Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM) visited NIGERIAN COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE LIMITED (NIGCOMSAT) on a courtesy visit. RASCOM is made up of 40 countries in Africa with the goal to provide telecommunication services, direct TV broadcast services and internet access in rural areas of Africa.

In conclusion, it was a busy week, as we internally try to take action on our strategic blueprint, engagements with Clients and Stakeholders required to achieve our vision. As leaders in the satellite communication Industry in Africa we recognize that meaningful connections and collaborations, sets the stage for more progress in our mission to advance digital development in the country.
