On “Nonprofit to Close Mobile Home Community to Build a Park

Catherine A. Nolan: I have lived in this park for 16 years and in this neighborhood 62 years. We are being forced to leave friends and family behind because there is no affordable housing in our North Collinwood neighborhood. So those of you who think it’s just a trailer we are being forced to leave behind think again. What if you were forced leave everything and everyone you know so someone could have a picnic on the land where your house once stood! Read More

On “Why Don’t California’s Nonprofit Housers Embrace Social Housing?

Jonathan Warren: Wow, this hit the nail on the head. Great piece. In our campaign to get social housing passed via initiative in Seattle in 2024, I was caught off guard by the resistance from the non-profit housing development world – naively assuming they’d be supportive. This piece helped me better understand why they weren’t. Thank you! Read More

Sylvia Martinez: The reason that the tax credit works, and is necessary, in California, is because it provides a vast amount of equity toward the very high cost of construction in this state. Social housing, particularly if new construction and net new units, which are preferable, will need just as much equity. Nonprofit housing developers do not have . . . Read More

David Thompson: . . . Limited equity co-ops, which need only a one-time subsidy, are not eligible for tax credits. Social housing a la Vienna with many co-ops appears to have better results with now 30% of all housing. The LIHTC model is heading for massive repeated subsidies, which will end the model downstream. We need other social housing models such as co-ops to increase the scale of . . . Read More

Andy Heidt: . . . We need to build the next system of affordable housing financing. State banking, or permanent affordable housing, zero interest or extremely low interest loan and grant funds are the only way to begin to meet the needs our savage inequalities have wrought. Read More

On “Not Only Building Buildings: The Black Community Developers Group

Lisa Hasegawa: YES!!! Thank you Miriam Axel-Lute and the Shelterforce team for letting the housing world know about the Black Community Developers Group (BCDG) and the awesome leadership of Leatrice W. Moore.?Via LinkedIn

On “'Workforce Housing' Is an Insulting Term

Dan Immergluck: My regular reminder on why it's a good thing to retire the term "workforce housing," especially if it is meant to distinguish moderate-income from lower-income housing . . . . This 2014 piece by Miriam Axel-Lute from Shelterforce is still pretty spot-on. Via LinkedIn

On “What Do Residents Think of Community Development Organizations?

Dan Hoffman: I think the last 35 years teaches a clear lesson, those entities that are focused on transactions, especially real estate transactions and even more so LIHTC deals more often than not find themselves principally relating to the entities that drive transactions and not principally those who are or would be members of the community. Especially true in those truth to power moments that poorer communities face. Via LinkedIn

On “Does Cleveland’s Plan for Public Green Space Pave the Way for Gentrification?

Jean Dahlquist: Normally I do not agree with articles like this, which often pitch improving neighborhoods as gentrification and make the case we should just leave areas polluted and without services. This article does not do that, instead it leans on the fact that we can make beautiful parks for everyone, they just have to intentionally be beautiful parks for everyone. Via LinkedIn

On “Blockbusting the Big Boys: Bill Would Ban Hedge Funds From Owning Single-Family Homes

Kristen Summer: Holy smokes this is amazing!!?Via Facebook

On “The Only Tool in the Box: What It Means That LIHTC Dominates Affordable Housing

Joe Kriesberg: Terrific article by Shelterforce about the need to expand the affordable housing took kit beyond low income housing tax credits! Via Twitter
