In a split second, a loss of power causes a container ship to veer off course and strike the column of a bridge. The subsequent collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge is shocking in terms of the human cost. The implications to the global supply chain are still being evaluated.
Once again, our industry’s brightest boffins are furiously reworking the data to mitigate the effects of the blockage. Some vessels are trapped in Baltimore Port, others are all at sea seeking an available nearby berth. With $80bn worth of cargo moved through Port of Baltimore last year, the local implications are huge.
The priority over the next weeks will be to get the shipping lane reopened. Thereafter, work to replace the bridge is likely to take several years. Logistics Business sends its sympathies to all of those directly affected.
