A week in the life of a Sales Development Representative here at Bazaarvoice.
Paul Abercrombie
Looking after Talent Acquisition across EMEA and APAC @ Klaviyo
Our Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) at Bazaarvoice are integral door openers! Each team member is highly skilled in unearthing opportunities of new business across multiple verticals and geographies. The way in which this is achieved is by developing solid and trusted relationships with senior business leaders within target organisations. The methods behind this vary from contact over the phone, email, events, acting on marketing campaigns and generally keeping a breast of all things social within current and target organisations. We work with some really fun companies from Missguided, John Lewis and Debenhams in the UK, OBI, Bosch & RM in Germany and Carrefour, CDiscount and Sephora in France.
The career path for SDRs is clear – if you prove you can be successful within the role you will be recognised and able to move up within the sales organisation. You are the future sales superstars of Bazaarvoice!
This is a dynamic and fast moving role but we also know how to have fun! We have quarterly team training which normally includes a fun activity or two. Free lunches, cool tedchnology and a super fun team (well we think so anyway!)
Our SDRs points of difference:
The ability to identify accounts and key people within them. Strategically plan to show new customers our value.
A sales driven mentality but with the ability to evangelise sometimes complex ideas and solutions for clients.
The ability to network and build strong relationships internally and externally.
In a typical week I will be involved in a number of different activities. A recent week consisted of the following:
Monday: Mondays are crazy busy. We tend to meet with our Manager to run through our plan for the week and update where we are for the month. We then sit down with our Account Executives to plan which accounts we are going to target and update where we are with current prospecting activities. We regularly have new hires so we will tend to go out for a lunch with them on a Monday which is great fun. I will then return and work on my plan for the week, starting with account selection and finding the key people I wish to target.
Tuesday: Tuesday mornings are call sessions. We work as a team to follow up and try and book meetings with our prospects. Our manager will regularly bring in breakfast which is a great way to start the day! She will also incentivise us throughout the sessions with prizes too! Including chocolates, sweets and You Earned it Points (a way you can build points to earn vouchers). The rest of the day will involve me following up on those I did not manage to get through to and making sure I doing enough to get to my target.
Wednesday: Wednesday’s are a day of focus and getting our head down! There tends to be less meetings as Account Executives are out seeing customers. We work closely with marketing so will have de-briefs with them on upcoming events. March/April and September through to November are big for events. Last year I attended an event called eTail Nordics where I spent three days in Copenhagen selling our solution to prospects. It was so much fun and it really helped me to get better at talking about our solution with future customers.
Thursday: I book in discovery calls which are 30 – minute discussions with prospects to talk to them about Bazaarvoice and share with them how we can help them. It’s a really great learning opportunity for me as I wish to move into sales. I get the opportunity to have really consultative conversations with C- level and Director Level people within really cool businesses! My last call was with Tetley Tea and Nando’s Grocery! We regularly go to Nando’s for lunch as a team so I had a good story on the call.
Friday: Happy Friday! We wear green on a Friday to support our Bazaarvoice colour. Friday’s are really important to get any last minute meetings, calls and discovery calls done to make sure I set myself up ready for the next week. I will also work on my prep for next week. We have market day in London on a Thursday and Friday. Friday’s are best so I tend to grab some food with the team and we eat together, we tend to have a quick game of ping pong in the Games Room and then spend the afternoon finishing my prep. Every two weeks we have ‘All Hands’, a Global meeting at 15:30 – 17:00. We have snacks and beer / prosecco and listen to company updates and success stories. I then either head home, or we head to the local pub for a drink or two before we go into the weekend.
Why you should join:
You will see it when you come in to visit us, but our culture is the best. The people are really supportive and the offices are really cool. The opportunity to progress is here and you get rewarded highly for your efforts. Not only monetary but also internally through recognition from my seniors. There is very little to moan about, the only thing I can think of is that sometimes I have to queue for my FREE lunch!!! J
