Recruiting is filled with cycles and pendulums
Cycles and Pendulums: This is the Way in Recruiting.

If you've been in recruiting long enough, you know it is filled with cycles and pendulums. This is likely not a new concept, so we won't take credit for any of it. We wanted to share how these cycles and pendulums impact RecOps. To context, cycles are easily predictable patterns that happen almost like clockwork, whereas pendulums are huge shifts. Examples look like:

  • Cycle: Higher interview numbers in Q1 than in Q4 because of business goals for the year and fewer holidays. Higher interview reschedule rates at the end of Q2 through Q3 because families travel due to summer break. Seasonal worker/intern hiring in Q2/Q4 because of long school breaks or the holiday season.
  • Pendulum: A shift in hiring strategy because of market conditions or new funding.

Cycles are usually easier for RecOps professionals because they can prepare for them (e.g. prep documentation for people being out, coverage schedules, etc) and use predictive analysis.

Pendulums, on the other hand, are usually trickier to handle and require the most flexibility/agility due to ambiguity and a lack of data (e.g. your company might not have data of what things looked like after the last market shift because it might have been a different system, no one at the company is still around from the last time, etc).

So RecOps folks, make sure you are always adding skills and learning for when the pendulum shifts.
