RecOps Graphic of the Week: Complexity of Lumping HROps and RecOps Together to Create People Ops

No alt text provided for this image

People Ops changing. Traditionally, People Ops professionals primarily focused on the HR side of the fence, and the title was synonymous with HR Ops. With the shift in the global markets and a focus on cost/headcount savings, more open People Ops roles are now calling for RecOps (and even some recruiting) experience.

While understandable on paper since HR and Recruiting are often the largest groups on a People team, in reality, PeopleOps and RecOps have different approaches, tooling, and mindsets. There is also a learning curve for either group transitioning into the other's space. For example, when it comes to tools, RecOps professionals often have to account for HRIS changes and their impacts on an ATS while People Ops professionals may not have that consideration. When it comes to social elements, People Ops may have higher levels of transgression because of the nature of the employee data they see whereas RecOps is usually not exposed to that data. Most importantly though, when it comes to interviewing for these expand People Ops roles, RecOps-experienced professionals may have to combat the perception that they can make the transition whereas People Ops professionals may benefit from the stigma that recruiting is something easy.

All this to say, the combination is possible but it isn't easy. If your company does currently have these two roles as separate functions, RecOps professionals - take it as an opportunity to stretch and cross-train.

But what are your thoughts? If you've made the transition in either direction, we'd love to hear them in the comments. If you don't feel comfortable, send your story to Jeremy and it will be shared anonymously.
