WEEK IN REVIEW

MONDAY

In Bangkok, also from 30 January to 3 February, the resumed first session of the ad hoc open-ended working group (OEWG) on a?science-policy panel to contribute further to the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution?will take place. The?first part?took place on 6 October 2022 in Nairobi in a hybrid format, and the resumed session will take place in person at the United Nations Conference Centre.?

TUESDAY

European Parliament will debate: 1- The use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport and amending Directive 2009/16/EC, 2- Deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure, and repealing Directive 2014/94/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council 3- Ensuring a level playing field for sustainable air transport, 4- Amending Directive 2010/40/EU on the framework for the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other modes of transport.?Also European Parliament’s Special Committee on the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons learned and recommendations for the future meets.

WEDNESDAY

U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Hearing: "The State of Transportation Infrastructure and Supply Chain Challenges" Meeting Details.?The UN Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) 2023 Partnership Forum will?take place on 31 January 2023.?The yearly ECOSOC Partnership Forum discusses ways to define and promote effective partnerships and how partnerships can best advance the sustainable development agenda and the 17 SDGs.?Global Government Leaders' Forum is held in Singapore.?

THURSDAY

European Parliament, Plenary Session on new rules on platform workers: Parliament will decide whether to confirm the negotiating position for talks with Council on new rules to improve conditions for workers on digital labor platforms. The rules would regulate how to correctly determine the employment status of platform workers and how digital labor platforms should use algorithms and artificial intelligence to monitor and evaluate workers.

Global Economic Pulse

The Federal Reserve’s rate decision due on Wednesday. Expectations are a 25bps validated by this week’s inflation data. European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to hike rates 50bps as will Bank of England (BoE). In Turkey, January inflation data is due and likely economic contraction is expected following the rest of the world.?In Asia, markets will get Purchasing Managers Index from China and India.?Markets expect signs that economic activity in China is picking up due to re-opening.?South Africa slowed the pace of interest rate hikes.?Pakistan will have an IMF visit.?Ghana is closer to a domestic debt deal.?El Salvador pays $600mm sovereign bond on time and in full.?Q4 GDP from Germany and inflation figures from Germany, South Korea and Indonesia will be reported.

Deloitte believes Emerging Market equities and bond yields have risen while Emerging Market debt issuance has lately surged (up more than 200% in the first two weeks of 2023 versus a year earlier). In fact, Emerging Market equities have increased faster than equity prices in advanced economies.?Recovery of the global economy is on the horizon, even though it is widely expected that there will be a slowdown/recession in 2023.
