“In an investigation, the details matter” by Jeremy Lyons

If you caught my LinkedIn on Wednesday, you saw a pretty lively discussion around quotes from Mean Girls that have direct parallels to RecOps (here is the link ICYMI). Stick within film and television, I wanted to zero in on the quote that is a constant in the first season of Reacher on Amazon (yes, it is a coincidence that the last episode of Season 2 just came out). The quote is, “In an investigation, the details matter.”

This quote has stuck with me is that in RecOps, the details matter tremendously. In any RecOps role, you are often dealing with imperfect information (e.g. the request for the report isn’t clear, the system isn’t responding to the normal inputs, etc) or a rush to solve, not solution (e.g., this is our stop gap, and when we have time we’ll figure out later). This is one of the reasons I think RecOps starts with Why because you need to learn how to ask the questions that will give you the right details.

I’ll also posit this: I think nearly every recruiting tech company is creating an ATS because of the details. Sure, a business argument could be made that your goal is to get customers and keep them sticky by giving them everything they need in one place (since changing your ATS isn’t as easy as it sounds and often avoided for as long as possible). However, another argument that could be made is that if you are doing everything in one system, all the details are there, and you don’t have to worry about remembering nuances (or how to calculate a data point that might use different verbiage in each system).

So, never be afraid to go deeper and get the details you need because you never know when those details can help you, your team, the candidates, or others.
