Week Gone by 21.02.2025: Benchmarks fall for the third week; Nifty closes just below 22,800.

Equity benchmarks extended their losing streak for the third straight week amid global concerns like potential U.S. tariffs, persistent inflation, and the Fed’s cautious stance.
For the week ending Friday, 21 February 2025, the Sensex fell 628.15 points (0.83%) to 75,311.06, while the Nifty declined 133.35 points (0.58%) to 22,795.90.?
The Mid-Cap gained 1.62% to 40,374.02, and the Small-Cap rose 0.98% to 45,856.?
Economy: Rekha Gupta was sworn in as Delhi’s new chief minister today, becoming the fourth woman to hold the post after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. Her appointment comes 10 days after the BJP's landslide victory, winning 48 of 70 seats and ending AAP’s decade-long rule. The party is yet to announce its ministerial lineup.
India’s urban unemployment rate for those aged 15+ remained at 6.4% in Oct-Dec 2024, unchanged quarterly. Male unemployment stayed flat at 5.8%, while female unemployment fell to 8.1% from 8.6% a year ago. Meanwhile, private sector activity saw its fastest growth since Aug 2024, with the HSBC Composite Index rising to 60.6 in Feb from 57.7 in Jan. Manufacturing growth eased slightly, with the PMI dipping to 57.1 but staying above its long-term average of 54.1.
U.K. inflation rose to 3% in January, with core inflation reaching 3.7%, the highest since April 2024. In the U.S., retail sales dropped 0.9% in January after a 0.7% rise in December, and housing starts fell 9.8% MoM. Fed minutes revealed hesitation on rate cuts amid inflation concerns, with discussions on slowing quantitative tightening. China’s central bank held the 1-year LPR at 3.1% and the 5-year LPR at 3.6%. Hong Kong inflation climbed to 2% in January, while Taiwan’s export orders fell 3% YoY.
