The Week in Digital 25.11.16
This week: Live Instagram video, troll-fighting on Twitter, a smart mirror and a music video shot in 4.2 seconds.
LIVE INSTAGRAM VIDEO
On Monday Instagram announced that they will be introducing live video on Instagram stories and disappearing photos and videos for groups and friends in Instagram direct. The new live feature will allow users to stream for up to one hour and, as soon as they start live streaming, users’ friends will receive a notification. The feature will work in a similar way to Facebook Live and Periscope, giving users the ability to like, comment and receive live feedback. The disappearing photo feature will work much in the same way as Snapchat; the photo will disappear when seen and users will receive a notification if the recipient replays or screenshots it.
TWITTER USERS FIGHT TROLLS WITH NEW TOOLS
Twitter has been rolling out new features, allowing users to ‘mute’ keywords, phrases and entire conversations at the notification level. This comes after some celebrity users have deleted their account altogether due to trolls attacking them during the US elections.
THANKSGIVING PERISCOPE HEARTS
To celebrate Thanksgiving, Periscope updated its platform to give users the opportunity to use Thanksgiving-themed ‘hearts’. These were activated when the broadcaster used Thanksgiving-related hashtags (#thanksgiving, #givethanks or #turkeyday).
TOUCHSCREEN SMART MIRROR
Designer and web developer Rafael Dymek has created a touchscreen mirror based on Apple’s iOS 10, highlighting future possibilities. The device appears like a normal mirror when inactive but apps can be moved and placed anywhere on the mirror. Possible features include being able to see the time, watch Netflix and order an Uber.
OK GO’S BREATHTAKING NEW VIDEO
OK Go’s incredible new music video was shot in just 4.2 seconds and has been expertly slowed down to 3 minutes 30 seconds, in sync with the music. Featuring paint explosions, flip books, water balloons and more, it is a must-watch this week.
