Staying up to date on all things sustainability can be challenging. That's why we've put together The Week in Context, a summary of the most noteworthy headlines across people, planet, and business.

New York City Could Be in for a Smoky Summer as Wildfires Rage – Bloomberg

Ongoing wildfires in Canada have forced thousands to evacuate, releasing harmful smoke that has spread to densely populated areas in the U.S. The current 436 wildfires, as reported by Canada's Wildland Fire Information Systems, started either prior to or at the beginning of the usual active fire season. As a result, North America faces a potentially long and smoky summer, signaling a new seasonal trend influenced by climate change.

Soaring EV Sales Could Still Leave World Short on Emissions Goal – Bloomberg

Research from BloombergNEF found that electric-vehicle sales are set to more than double by 2026 compared to sales currently, but achieving emission-free road transportation by 2050 will demand further progress. The firm predicts a surge in plug-in passenger vehicle shipments are primarily driven by increased sales in China and the U.S. This growth compensates for slower expansion in Europe, attributed to supply chain constraints and a cost-of-living crisis affecting demand.

El Ni?o planet-warming weather phase has begun – BBC

El Ni?o has started in the Pacific Ocean, intensifying climate change and raising concerns of 2024 becoming the hottest year on record. It will also affect global weather, potentially causing drought in Australia, increased rainfall in the southern U.S., and weakening India's monsoon.
