The Week That Changed The Face of Public Cloud

What a busy week it’s been! We probably heard a lot more about cloud in the last one week than what it was in the whole of last quarter. Some of those events have so much influence that they may change the face of the public cloud market.

AWS is getting stronger while cloud dominates Microsoft’s business. HP has exited the public cloud business and at the same time we saw EMC and VMware spinoff a new cloud entity. The blue whale at Docker gobbled up Tutum, and Larry Ellison’s company takes another stab at the cloud.

Here is a round-up of major twists and turns from last week’s thriller.

AWS, the cloud juggernaut becomes a major contributor to Amazon’s revenue

Amazon has beaten the expectations by reporting a record revenue of $25.4B. Investors are happy with the growth the company is demonstrating. AWS is in the limelight for its role in driving Amazon’s revenue. With 78 percent growth compared to last year, AWS generated an impressive $2.08B in revenue in Q3 2015. It reported $521 million in operating income for the quarter, which is up from $98 million for the same quarter in 2014.

AWS has become an unstoppable force in the public cloud market. With the soaring revenues, there will be additional investments and geographical expansion. This is certainly not good news for the competition.
