A Week of Career Navigation & Guidance for Young People

This past Week the LHDA was all about futures and aspirations of young students across the country. In Maseru, on Thursday March 2nd, we participated at the Council on Higher Education’s Career Fair at the Manthabiseng Convention Center where we shared the expansive list of career fields and professions that exist within the LHDA, spanning Engineering, Social Sciences, Humanities and Operations/Business Support professions. Across a few hills and rivers over at Mohale High School, on Wednesday, March 1st, Mohale FOB team had just done the same!

At ‘Manthabiseng, the Divisional Manager for Corporate Services highlighted some of the common educational tracks that people can follow to lead into the different careers, and most importantly shared the various ways in which LHDA supports those journeys.

“The LHDA’s Young Professionals Program is a hall mark for LHDA’s strategy to develop top talent right out of university, giving young people below the age of 35, and opportunity to work within LHDA on a rotational program for 2 years. Our YPP program graduates come out of the program as formidable young professionals who can compete in the global marketplace, but we are thankful that many of that talent decide to stay within the LHDA.” Mr. Moejane Stated.

“The current LHDA Chief Executive, as well as the Divisional Manager for Phase II, are both products of LHDA’s Young Professionals Program, and are now at the helm of the organization. If that is not proof of an effective program, I do not know what is!” He exclaimed.

The presentation then covered the much coveted but mostly misunderstood LHDA Bursary scheme, he explained that, the comprehensive all-costs-covered bursary from the LHDA is a purely merit, and need-based scholarship that is received by the best of the best at their schools, with demonstrable financial need. They are brought to the LHDA through strong recommendations from their universities, and go through rigorous selection program before they are awarded the scholarship. This scheme is administered through existing MoUs between the LHDA and the National University of Lesotho, University of the Free State, Wits University, University of Johannesburg, and University of Pretoria.

Over at Mohale, things were no different, Mohale Dam Safety Supervisor, Mr Sentle Mojela shared similar messages on professions within the LHDA, but more powerfully, share his own professional journey and story with the attendees.

The LHDA prides itself in the calibre of talent that it not only attracts, but also that it is able to cultivate from within the organization. We are proud of the LHDA teams, and look forward to welcoming these young ambitious faces we encountered this week in the years to come!
