Here's what you'll need to know as you head into the weekend:

  • We recognize words are how we primarily tell stories at Business First, but we firmly believe art can be an equally powerful medium that injects life into communities. It is our hope that through this project we will see New Mexico through a different lens, the lens of our young people. Each year, Albuquerque Business First creates a Book of Lists and Leaders that serves as a recurring resource for the local business community. The book, compiled by Jayme Sileo, Business First’s data reporter, is more than just a directory of organizations filled with facts and figures, it tells a story of growth and impact. With an eye toward what that progress could lead to, this year's book will be centered on the future of New Mexico. As part of that, the team at Business First is collecting works of art from students from across the state. We are asking each student who participates to draw, paint, sculpt, etc. what New Mexico looks like to them. Get the details on how to submit your young person's work. | READ MORE

  • On Aug. 5, the Albuquerque City Council approved a proposal to build new affordable housing in West Mesa. West Mesa Ridge Apartments is located on a 12.4-acre site at 701 Coors Blvd. NW. Once built, the project will bring 128 residential units to Albuquerque, with rents starting at 70% of the area median income, according to a memorandum submitted to City Council. Following the approval, Chris Baca, president and CEO of YesHousing Inc., a nonprofit community development corporation, will start applying for city permits, with construction expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025, he said. • Tourism is a major economic driver in New Mexico, with lodging making up 32.2% of all visitor spending in 2022, according to the New Mexico Tourism Department. Despite the economic impact, hospitality businesses in Albuquerque still face obstacles —?from staffing issues to implementing new technologies to securing funding. To get a better grasp on the current state of the industry, Albuquerque Business First reached out to representatives at local hotels as part of its annual Albuquerque Hotels List. Here's what Data Reporter Jayme Sileo discovered. | READ MORE
