The week before Christmas…
It’s the week before Christmas, and tension is mounting;
you haven’t yet shopped, but then, no one is counting
On anything special from you, there’s no reason
for you to be nervous this holiday season;
For sure there’ll be gifts that you’ll buy on a whim
to surprise a particular her, maybe him
Who, of course, won’t have something to match what you’ve done,
but isn’t that just what makes Christmas so fun?
It’s been said, many times, even on Christmas Eve,
the joy is to give rather than to receive!
You might not have much of a budget to spend
but even the smallest amount, in the end,
Will symbolize what this old holiday means;
amid all the lights and those sweet manger scenes
Where wise men transported their presents so far
to a newborn messiah, they followed a star
We’ve been told was a sign that would change the whole world;
a hopefulness shining so bright, it unfurled
Into a tradition now centuries old,
back then it was frankincense, myrhh and some gold
That today might be jewelry, food or a toy
delivering smiles to that young girl or boy
Who embodies the magic that Christmas defines:
it’s all about love and the peace that aligns
At least once, every year, to bring people together;
a special occasion, regardless of whether
You’re stranger or family, friendly or foe…
it’s Christmas, and no matter where you might go,
All conflicts are silenced, the fighting’s on ‘pause’,
we eagerly look for that ol’ Santa Claus!
Now if we could just figure out how we could keep
our Christmases daily and faithfully leap
Into a bright future – we’re actually near it –
a time when, at last, this great holiday spirit
Propels us to hug one another so tight…
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
