If you've followed the RecOps Collective newsletter, you've probably seen the name Adam Gordon pop up a few times. Adam is a recruiter enablement champion and runs the Recruiter Enablement YouTube channel, where he has interviewed several RecOps professionals like Mark Jenkins, Stephanie Baysinger, GPHR, and Stacey Slater. Adam recently launched a new tech platform, Poetry - Recruiter Enablement Technology, and is doing an exclusive demo specifically for RecOps folks. RecOps on Angel’s Share and Devil’s Cut. by Jeremy Lyons:


Requisitions are barrels by a different name. While some things get better with age in a barrel, like whisky or wine, requisition aging a candidate does not have the same effect. As a matter of fact, it has the opposite effect.

If the point of the interview process is to distill what a candidate can bring to your organization, then carrying over some terminology from distilling can also apply in recruiting. In this case, it is the Angel’s Share and the Devil’s Cut. I covered these on posts Wednesday and Thursday this week but thought it was important enough to elaborate on here.

What are the Angel’s Share and the Devil’s Cut and how do they apply in recruiting?

  • Angel Share (Distilling) - Refers to when some of the whiskey evaporates during the aging process. This results in a yearly volume loss of 2-5% per year per barrel.
  • Angel Share (Recruiting) - Refers to the 2-5% of candidates or applicants who “evaporate” due timing (e.g. non-responsive because they took another role)
  • Devil’s Cut (Distilling) - The amount of distillate (e.g. bourbon, whiskey, anything aged in a barrel) due to being absorbed by the barrel. Within 48 hours of filling a new cask, the wood absorbs 2-5%.
  • Devil’s Cut (Recruiting) - Refers to the 2-5% of candidates or applicants missed because of “absorption” into the requisition (e.g. never being reviewed, sitting untouched)

Can you stop the Angel’s Share and/or the Devil’s Cut?

  • In most cases, you can’t stop the Angel’s Share, only mitigate it. You can’t force a candidate to respond in a timely manner, all you can do is control what you can on your side (e.g. create and uphold SLAs, use automation, fine-tune process). However, the Devil’s Cut is something you have a tremendous amount of control over because you have control over how quickly and how often you review candidates. This can be achieved by leveraging your tools to their maximum efficiency and ruthlessly reviewing/prioritizing/reprioritizing tasks within your job scope.
