In interviews, I often tell people that the question word I anchor on is Why. In talking with other RecOps professionals my age, I found out this was pretty common because knowing the Why behind the What enables us to navigate around ambiguity with greater ease. This Why was one of the reasons I wrote the article RecOps Starts With Why.

But digging into the history of RecOps, it was clear that Why wasn’t the always the anchoring question word for RecOps. This led me back to thinking about the different generations of RecOps. In turn, this led me to the graphic above ?? and the description below ??

???? Generation 1?? : What Gen 1 of RecOps anchored on "What" because they were building the first RecOps models. They had to determine what needed to be fixed and what needed to be done.

???? Generation 2?? : Why Gen 2 of RecOps anchored on "Why" because What they needed was built/or was being built. Why it was built that way became important in order to fix or correct any underlying problems (e.g. was it an enablement problem or a system issue?).

???? Generation 3?? : How Gen 3 of RecOps will anchor on "How" because the What and Why are already defined. How you solve a problem will be important for Gen 3 because of the advancements in AI since how it is used will dictate whether you need people or more technology.

Editor Note: I’ll expound on this next week, but it has merit regarding RecOps and why you need to push for detailed rejection reasons. A candidate refusing an offer based on compensation is charged. A candidate declining an offer based on compensation implies a level of diplomacy and that this candidate could be approached in the future.
