Always Be a Candidate by Jeremy Lyons

The acronym ABC might be one of the most common in the English-speaking world. The most popular is likely Always Be Closing due to the Alec Baldwin scene in Glengarry Glen Ross (Strong language warning). But in the world of RecOps, one to think about is always be a candidate.

Why Always Be a Candidate?

Two reasons: creativity and empathy.

Creativity and Empathy?

Yes. The empathy piece comes from thinking through your processes, your job descriptions, and your candidate experience and asking yourself the question, “If I were a candidate, what would I want to see or experience here?” The creativity comes in because once you have identified every element, it becomes how you make the needed and necessary changes.

Does that mean that we should also always be interviewing?

That’s a fair question and my answer might be a spicy take: yes, you should. One important but often overlooked aspect of RecOps is its ability to operate as an intelligence function. By interviewing with other companies, you will see what they are doing in action and likely discover new tools (e.g., do they have a candidate management tool like candidate.fyi or something homegrown?). This type of research ensures you aren’t stagnant in your processes and thinking.

ABC, I really like this take. To your point, it allows us as Ops folks to see other processes and tools that companies are using in their candidate journey and we can say, hey that looks cool, or oh dear lord let's never do that. ??
