Data Caree Brunch: the role of data in relation to current technology growth.
On 14 December DataGirls Tanzania , For the first time hosted their event—the Data Career Brunch which focused on exploring the critical role of data in relation to the current technological growth.
The event was fortunate to have incredible speakers Rachel Maro ATUWENE KILASI Christina Ng’oleshi Jackline Newton just to name a few, who shared their personal data journeys, inspiring others who aspire to enter the field. There is a key role data plays in facilitating informed decision-making by providing objective insights and evidence. In fields like AI, IoT, and machine learning, data enables decision-makers to analyze trends, predict outcomes, and minimize risks. Conversely, inaccurate or insufficient data can result in poor decisions.
Alongside the Data Career Brunch, Datagirls Tanzania also launched their podcast, DATA SOGA. This podcast will explore all things related to data and bring together individuals across the data space.

Technological revolutions many times begin at the university level. Recently, the University of Dar es Salaam held a workshop to discuss AI ethics, data protection, and how universities can contribute to this transformation.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Daniel Mushi, has urged African higher learning institutions to create strategies for leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.
Speaking at the opening of a workshop titled “AI, Data Protection, and 21st Century Higher Education Institutions in Africa”, organized by the Association of African Universities (AAU) in collaboration with UDSM, Prof. Mushi stressed the need for equity, ethics, and strong governance in adopting AI technologies. He also praised Tanzania's Personal Data Protection Act as a key step toward building trust in educational systems.
Held at UDSM on December 3, 2024, the workshop brought together scholars and experts from across Africa to explore AI ethics, data protection laws, and governance frameworks in education technology.
UDSM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. William Anangisye, emphasized the university’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation, emphasizing its leadership in tackling challenges in Africa’s higher education sector. The event laid the groundwork for deeper collaborations and practical solutions to drive ethical AI integration and technological innovation.
