TEENS IN AI FROM TANZANIA AI COMMUNITY
This year’s Teens in AI Techathon, held locally in Tanzania from March 8th to 9th, 2025. This event brought together 45 students from four secondary schools in Dar es Salaam to tackle local challenges and align their projects with the Sustainable Development Goals.
And it was proudly supported by Tanzania AI Community
Participants explored how artificial intelligence can boost their ideas and create meaningful change. Great gratitude to organizers Grace Joachim and Sheila A. and partners TechStar Innovation Hub .
The techathon was mentored by Johari Bakari , Rebeca Joshua , Yusra Abdulbastwa , Fatima Bakari , and Cleopatra Nicolaus , as well as judges Annagrace Malamsha , Stanley_mosha Mosha, and Janice M.
This is another huge step to ensure fundamentals to AI are available to anyone.
AI FROM FRONTLINERS
Gemini brings multimodal image generation to the masses
In an industry-first, Alphabet just gave everyone access to Gemini’s native image generation capabilities on AI Studio.
What makes it unique? Usually, your image prompts get fed through an LLM — and in the process, details can get lost in translation. Gemini 2.0 Flash, on the other hand, can move between different mediums on-the-fly, delivering much better speed and accuracy.
What can you do with it? You can generate a recipe and add photos for each step. Or embed entire words or sentences into your images. You can also quickly edit specific parts of an image without having to regenerate an entirely new one.

Gemini’s also getting a major upgrade: Now, anyone can try out the platform’s Deep Research feature, not just paid subscribers. Alphabet is also opening up access to Gems — customizable presets “like a translator, meal planner, or math coach.” Finally, Gemini can now integrate into your search history and apps for a more personalized experience.

A Perplexity-powered phone and more from MWC
DT, T-Mobile’s parent company DT has announced a new AI phone powered by Perplexity, set to launch later this year for under $1,000. The device will integrate Perplexity Assistant directly, eliminating the need for app-based navigation, and will also incorporate AI technologies from Google, ElevenLabs, and PicsArt.
At this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Lenovo unveiled an AI-powered emoji companion for laptops and introduced an AI Stick that transforms a computer into an AI powerhouse. Meanwhile, Perplexity confirmed its collaboration with DT on this innovative AI phone, marking the search platform’s first venture into AI hardware.
Manus AI delivers another ‘DeepSeek moment’
Months after DeepSeek’s R1 shook the AI world, China surprises us with Manus – an agent that can build apps, perform deep research, and even screen resumes on its own.
Created by Beijing and Wuhan-based startup Butterfly Effect, Manus claimed to be the first “general AI agent,” outpacing OpenAI’s Deep Research on the GAIA benchmark despite modest funding and computing power.
Early reactions are mixed yet excited. Hugging Face’s Victor Mustar hailed it as “the most impressive AI tool” he’s tried, while others shared videos of their first impressions.
Despite some testers noting occasional errors and signs that Manus may simply be a wrapper for Anthropic’s Claude 3.5, fans eagerly await its upgrade to Claude 3.7.

OpenAI unveils new tools to help developers build their agents
OpenAI might be under pressure as smaller startups like Convergence and Manus roll out their own AI agents, claiming they can handle complex tasks as well as OpenAI’s offerings, but at a lower cost.
In response, OpenAI has introduced a new suite of tools that could change the game.
The new Responses API combines their latest releases—including web search, Deep Research, and Operator—into one platform, allowing developers to mix and match these tools for custom apps. Additionally, new observability features help companies monitor the performance of their agents, while the open-source Agents SDK makes it easier to integrate these capabilities into existing systems.
This move is significant because, despite the impressive performance of emerging agents, they often require high energy and can be unpredictable when scaling to millions of users. OpenAI’s strong compute power and reliable, well-established infrastructure offer a level of security that developers value, even if it comes at a higher cost. Ultimately, these new features could drive a surge in innovative AI applications across various industries.
Everything else you should know today
Funding: CoreWeave reportedly signed an $11.9B deal to supply OpenAI with cloud compute for the next five years. In addition, Anysphere, the developer behind the AI coding tool Cursor, is on track to raise hundreds of millions potentially valuing the startup at nearly $10B. Meanwhile, ServiceNow acquired the AI-powered enterprise platform Moveworks for $2.85B.
Funding: Celestial AI, which uses light-based technology to enhance AI chip interactions, raised $250M in a new funding round, valuing the company at $2.5B. Separately, Norm AI, specializing in compliance-focused agents, raised $48M in Series B funding with backing from Salesforce founder Marc Benioff.
Clear Conscience: Moonvalley unveiled what it calls the "most powerful AI video model trained exclusively on clean data," meaning it only uses owned or fully licensed source material. Interested users can sign up for the waitlist.
Talent Tether: European tech leaders, including the founders of SoundCloud and Mistral, are pooling around $10M to incentivize young entrepreneurs to launch startups within the continent instead of relocating abroad.
Set and Forget: Eraser, an AI tool that transforms company data into visuals, has introduced a new feature that automatically generates live diagrams from your codebase. Try out the diagram generator to see it in action, here.
All in One: Alibaba announced that its consumer chatbot is now powered by its frontier Qwen models, which combine deep thinking, search, and agentic capabilities—all accessible from a single app.
