AI’s Role in Content Manipulation
Have you been sleuthing to find out what happened with Princess Kate’s Mother’s Day photo like the rest of the internet? TMZ is on the case, and it reports AI likely wasn’t the culprit of the photo’s inconsistencies. However, there’s a larger conversation to be had about content manipulation and how easy AI makes it.?
It's not just about a photo looking a bit off — it’s getting harder to know if what we see online is genuine. As these AI tools get better at creating and editing images and videos, spotting the fakes isn’t as easy as it used to be. As a result, a new wave of doubt is cast on everyone, from Princess Kate to news outlets that the public has trusted for decades.?
What this means for communications professionals is doing whatever’s necessary to maintain that trust and integrity. We need to do better than the Princess of Wales vaguely apologizing “for any confusion” and disclose when and how we use AI to develop content. Our reputations depend on it.

??? ChatGPT’s Speech now available on desktop
What’s happening: Last September, ChatGPT added a feature to its mobile app that allows users to speak back and forth with the AI tool. Now, the speech feature is available on desktop, too. You can choose from five voices by going to Settings > Speech > Voices. You’ll notice that under each ChatGPT output there are three buttons — the first icon, a speaker, is the Read Aloud function.
Why it’s important: Since you have to click on the speaker icon each time ChatGPT produces an output, and there’s no easy way to use speech-to-text for inputs, this doesn’t exactly replicate the conversation experience the app provides. However, this can still be a useful feature for communications professionals.
Try this: Sometimes, when you’re so entrenched in what you’re writing, your eyes can gloss over words and mistakes happen. Using this feature, you can hear the output (or ask ChatGPT to recite an input back to you) instead of read it, giving you another way to review what you’re working on. It’s particularly useful if you’re preparing a speech or trying to replicate an interaction, like a reporter asking questions to an executive.
Quote of the Week
“(Elon Musk’s) allegations — including claims that GPT-4 is an AGI, that open-sourcing our technology is the key to the mission, and that we are a de facto subsidiary of Microsoft — do not reflect the reality of our work or mission.”
— Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, in a memo to his company about Elon Musk’s lawsuit
