The Week of AI Drama

March just got the most dramatic start ever. The first week was eventful, to say the least. OpenAI entered the second season of drama with Elon Musk suing the company, as Sam Altman made it back to the board, along with three new board members. While OpenAI is busy setting its house in order, Anthropic and InflectionAI unveiled Claude 3 and Inflection 2.5, the latest iterations of their language models, rivalling GPT-4 and Google's Gemini.
Meanwhile, India saw a new AI advisory spark heated debates. The advisory, which comes quickly on the heels of Google Gemini’s controversies , requires companies to seek government permission to deploy generative AI.
OpenAI Drama (Season 2): Amid the ongoing Musk and Altman legal tussle, OpenAI released a blog announcing the latter’s return to the AI startup’s board of directors after being ousted as its CEO in November. Three new board members, including Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, and Fidji Simo came onboard following criticism of the board's all-male composition and lack of diversity.
However, former board member Ilya Sutskever (chief scientist), whom Musk had recruited from Google DeepMind, has not been reinstated .?
Discussions on the November drama have erupted again , with several naming Mira Mirati as the reason behind Altman’s firing in the first place.
The origin of this drama can be traced back to March last year, when X chief Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI, the very company he helped create. Musk accused the organisation of deviating from its original mission of being “not-for-profit and open-source” and becoming a de facto subsidiary of Microsoft.
OpenAI responded to the lawsuit by disclosing email exchanges that took place since January 2016 between Altman, Musk, Sutskever, and OpenAI president Greg Brockman, completing the puzzle.?
Despite Musk's initial pledge of $1 billion, OpenAI received only $45 million from him and over $90 million from other donors. Musk founded OpenAI to challenge Google’s dominance in AI , but grew sceptical of the startup’s relevance over time, with Google DeepMind’s presence growing stronger. In 2023, he eventually launched his AI startup xAI, creator of the LLM Grok , which he intends to open source. Simultaneously, Musk is likely unhappy with Altman trying his luck in robotics.
Beyond the legal battle, the core questions remain: Did OpenAI indeed betray its original mission? How can we ensure that an even more powerful AI will benefit all of humanity, not just a select few? Read more here. ?
New LLMs in Town: Anthropic, backed by Amazon and Google, has launched Claude 3 , a generative AI model family. These models surpass GPT-4 on key benchmarks, including quick results and strong reasoning capabilities. While people are praising it for its “meta-awareness”, Claude 3 has also outperformed Gemini 1.0 Pro and competes effectively with Gemini 1.0 Ultra.?
On the other hand, Microsoft and NVIDIA backed Inflection AI introduced Inflection-2.5 . Despite boasting a similar performance as GPT-4, Inflection-2.5 uses only 40% of the computing resources for training.

India’s New AI Advisory: Amid the Indic LLM revolution, the new government AI advisory initially received flak for being a setback to India’s AI innovation. Before the IT minister cleared the air, many misunderstood that besides “large companies”, startups would also need to comply with the requirements.?
Interestingly, the advisory came soon after Google’s Gemini spewed inappropriate content, including a biassed response against the country’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, disappointing Chandrashekhar. Read the detailed discussion here. ?
At the same time, the Indian Cabinet has approved a budget of Rs 10,371.92 crore to bolster the country’s AI capabilities by establishing a Public AI Compute Infrastructure with over 10,000 GPUs as part of the comprehensive IndiaAI Mission. Read more here .

Analytics with Her: Saarthee’s Women Leaders Break Barriers to Drive Positive Change
The inclusion of women in the technology and analytics fields has historically been low, with women primarily underrepresented in both the workforce and leadership positions.?
Saarthee Founder & CEO and 2023 Women to Watch in Women in Cable and Telecom (WICT) Philadelphia - Shikha Miglani said, “From an early age, girls are taught to play safe, be likeable, have limited ambition and blend in. When we grow up, we overcome these strong psychological biases where we need to take risks, be tough when the situation calls, and be insanely ambitious and intellectually superior – everything we are expected not to be. While the men were learning to kickbox from day one, we suddenly find ourselves in a boxing ring trying to build endurance.”
