WEEK 4: DELEGATING

To assess the state of high school coaching, we conducted a?nationwide survey ?of over 6,000 coaches. Our questionnaire, focusing on coaching skills and abilities, revealed the following insights.

DID YOU KNOW?

72% of coaches surveyed reported being below excellent at managing/assigning assistant coaches’ duties.

ONE RESOURCE

Trust vs. Performance (Must Watch!). Simon Sinek , explores the relationship between these two crucial elements in leadership and teamwork. Sinek argues that while performance is often prioritized in organizations, trust is actually the more essential factor for long-term success.

ONE TAKEAWAY

Let’s face it. As coaches we want to do it all because we want it done our way. But we can't do it all. We have to learn to give tasks and responsibilities to our assistants and trust them to do it and do it well. The only way to begin doing this is… well, begin! Let your assistants know you trust them, and then give them duties. They may fail or they may knock it out of the park. Either way, you are building a relationship of trust with them that will make them ultimately successful— and take stuff off your plate! Start small and work your way up to important things. Give them ownership of some jobs. Then give them all the credit when it succeeds. The relationship of trust will help you get more done and put synergy in your staff!
