Why you should stop rendering to PNG (and use EXR instead)
25 years on, EXR still fights the inertia of web friendly formats. This article debunks the many myths against EXRs and why they're superior. Tl,dr; EXR have higher dynamic range, smaller files, custom arbitrary channels, faster open/save times, proper alpha encoding and higher bit depth. So unless you're posting directly to the web, save to EXR.
One of the highest performing Nike Ads in 2023 was 100% CG. No athletes required.
Considering the millions that Nike shell out on endorsements, the ROI on this ad (the 2nd highest engagement for 2023) must be one of their best yet. Proving that when it's done well, audiences do in fact love CG. Watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=276_3jsozYQ
Behind the scenes of John Wick 4’s VFX
Rodeo FX just posted two behind-the-scenes; The Apartment Massacre (pictured above) and the Arc de Triumph scene. Glad to see a studio reviving the DVD featurette format that we’ve lost to streaming. Hopefully more follow suit.
Poliigon ditches credits, simplifies pricing
Nobody wants to do math when buying a texture, so we ditched the variable credit costs (10, 20, 30 credits), and now everything costs just 1 asset. And for those who hate subscriptions; we’ve brought back the ability to buy packs of downloads. See the new pricing: https://poliigon.com/pricing

1 年Great read! I usually use png or jpgs for my render paintovers in photoshop but I will start using EXR. Thanks!

1 年Just to make clear what the difference is. When you render in EXR Full Float with DWAB compression the files will be smaller than PNG 8-bit. This gives you the maximum control over color corrections, grading, and playouts for different devices (in the future). Finally, you will play out your result with a specific view transform for usually sRGB devices. The big disadvantage of LDR images is that the result of a view transform will be baked to a limited 8-/16-bit sRGB color space and your further post-processing is very limited. You want to use a so-called "non-destructive" workflow. The reason why many people render in PNG is, that it's the standard setting and they are not used to a scene-referred linear workflow. Once you have understood the advantages of a linear workflow, what a view transform protocol does, and how to use OCIO profiles across the usual applications for compositing it's a pretty easy and satisfying non-destructive workflow. You will never go back. Here's an example of a MultLayer EXR (DWAB) compared to the PNG files of all passes. PNG 15% lossless is the standard setting in Blender. If you set this to 100% saving takes much longer. However, it's recommended to use TIFF for LDR images instead of PNG.
