Week 34: Climate news in 1 minute!

(Our) top 3 insights of this week

1.?????Thousands of penguins die in Antarctic ice breakup: A catastrophic die-off of emperor penguin chicks has been observed in the Antarctic, with up to 10,000 young birds estimated to have been killed. The sea-ice underneath the chicks melted and broke apart before they could develop the waterproof feathers needed to swim in the ocean.

?The birds most likely drowned or froze to death.

2. ????Ecuador’s people voted against oil extraction in Yasuní national park: ?The Ecuadorian authorities did everything in their power to prevent this happening. The government initially refused to accept a petition with 750,000 signatures but the message from Ecuadorean people was clear: people will vote to keep oil in the ground. People were overwhelmingly in favour of stopping oil drilling in Yasuní national park.

?Can this success be replicated elsewhere in the world?

3. Panama Canal ships queue up amidst drought conditions: More than 30 of ships seemingly stationary outside the busy shipping lane that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific because of low water levels, attributing delays to climate change and increased seasonal demand. As of Monday, the Panama Canal Authority has reduced the number of ships allowed to travel through the canal from a daily average of 36 to 32.
