Living a Meaningful Life

When does life feel most?meaningful?to you? Can you name a truly meaningful moment you experienced in the last seven days??

In a recent webinar for?PURPOSE CLUB , I quoted Carl Jung who said, “Man cannot stand a meaningless life.”?

When life is meaningful, you feel good about yourself. You feel alive. You have a sense of direction. You make authentic choices. You meet challenges with courage and wisdom.

In my book?Higher Purpose , I write about how I met Freddie Frankl, the nephew of Viktor Frankl, who wrote the classic work?Man’s Search for Meaning.

In our conversations, Freddie taught me about the three broad levels of meaning and purpose that are outlined in his uncle’s work. Here is a summary of these three meanings.

Level 1: Meaning for Self. At Level 1, the quest is for personal meaning. Do you know what presses your “This is meaningful” button? Have you worked that out yet? Are you paying attention to your life? At this personal level, Viktor Frankl explained that “the meaning is unique and specific in that it must and can be fulfilled by him [you] alone; only then does it achieve a significance which will satisfy his [your] own will to meaning.”
Level 2: Shared Meaning.?The will to meaning?connects you to your true self and to others too. Meaning is intrinsic in every relationship. It is the invisible thread of communication that weaves through your ancestors, your children, and the people you meet. It connects you to butterflies and rainbows, whales and dolphins, and trees and bees. Every relationship has an essential meaning and purpose. The more open you are to this, the more likely you will experience the gift, the lesson, the healing, and the love that each relationship offers.
Level 3: A Super Meaning. Viktor Frankl coined the term “supermeaning” to describe a continuous, universal meaning that unfolds across time and space. This supermeaning belongs to a much larger story than we are aware of at Levels 1 and 2. Frankl said it “necessarily exceeds and surpasses the finite intellectual capacities of man.” It takes us beyond the realm of logic and into the mind of universal love.

How do you experience meaningfulness?

I encourage you to pay attention this week to the moments when life feels meaningful. Pay attention. Take notes. And allow your purpose to be revealed to you!

I wish you a beautiful day.

Robert
