I Made it Through the Rain

Barry Manilow has been in residence at the London Palladium for the last couple of weeks. And last Friday, I took my daughter Bo, and her two friends Rae and Malaya, to see Barry in concert.

“Girls, you are about to be MANILOWED,” I told them. They had no idea what was about to hit them. The only Barry song they knew was Copacabana.

This was not my first Barry Manilow concert. I was ready for what was about to happen.

Three songs into Barry’s set, and we were on our feet, dancing, singing, crying and laughing, and wearing white feather bowers with sparkling lights that we bought in the foyer.

“I love Barry Manilow,” cried Bo. “I think this might be the best concert of my life,” said Rae. “Where has Barry Manilow been my whole life,” said Malaya.

What's your favourite Barry Manilow song? It’s hard to choose just one, isn’t it? Mine is “I Made it Through the Rain.”

Since the concert, Bo has been listening to all the albums, and reading up about Barry’s life. “Dad, you know how you say Stevie Wonder is your life coach, well I think Barry Manilow is my life coach.”

“Barry Manilow is my life coach too,’ I told Bo.

“But what about Stevie?” she asked.

“You can have more than one life coach,” I told her.

“Alright then,” she said.

What is it about Barry Manilow? Well, he sings the songs that make the whole world sing! And his songs are stories. They are stories mostly from his own life - about the ups, the downs, the rejections, the heartbreaks, and the courage to keep on going.?

Also, Barry found his passion. And once he found his passion, he stuck at it, through thick and thin. In Barry’s words, he says,

“I am a musician. My passion for music has obliterated everything in its path for my entire life. Whenever there was a choice between music and anything else, music won hands down every time.”

Finding your passion is a great thing. My greatest wish for Bo and for my son Christopher is that they find their passion too. And if I can help them with that, in any way, I will feel like I’ve been a good dad.
