FYI - It's Almost Summer Vacation

It is almost summer vacation!??

As an FYI, this summer, I am taking my first truly European vacation. Like my fellow Danes, I will be Out of Office and not issuing this newsletter for the month of July! I am prioritizing myself and family time. I believe this is crucial to continue performing at a high level.

Why Do You Want to Work Here?

In a recent post, Jan Tegze asked "Do you know what employers are really looking for when they ask, "Why do you want to work here?" ??"

This reminded me of a clarifying conversation I had while interviewing for a video games company. When asked this question, I answered in a generic way of why I love working for games companies and with their brilliant employees. I did not customize it to the company.

When the interviewer called this out, I realized that I was going through the motions for this particular company and did not have direct connection with the company or its culture - I wasn't excited about this particular opportunity. And it was apparent to both of us at this point.

The interviewer was very gracious and gave me an opportunity to fix my answer. However, my initial answer to the question was an "ah-ha" moment for me - it was not the right position. So I withdrew myself as a candidate.

If you do want a position, don't do what I did. Instead follow Jan's advice:

• "Demonstrate that you are the perfect fit for their team by aligning your passion, enthusiasm, and values with theirs."
