Week 20.41 The Empathy Trap

Week 20.41 The Empathy Trap

I don't know about you, but this year has been exhausting me with all of the low-level stress from what are now countless factors. No matter how well I have adapted to the new non-normal of our virtual and over activated life, there are additional traps that I fall in, usually without recognizing what is happening. Fortunately, I am a regular on Monday with Marshall call and this week was another inspiring session in which he discussed the difference between cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Many of us are challenged by emotional empathy, internalizing the pain of another. Marshall pointed out that when we engage in emotional empathy, we are not doing anything beneficial, we are actually increasing the amount of pain! We may not be able to avoid this empathy, but we should be aware of it so that we can reduce it. On the other hand, cognitive empathy, being aware and understanding of the pain of the other so that we can help them through their pain and without holding the pain ourselves, can be very valuable. We can imagine some of the best doctors excel at this - they have the ability to understand the pain of their patients (and communicate that they understand the pain) without internalizing it.

Feel good for the sake of feeling good. This has been a recurring theme over the past few weeks. Don't feel someone else's pain so you don't feel the pain. It sounds simple and should be obvious and almost everyone on the call resisted accepting it. We all wanted to feel good to help others. We need to let that coupling go! Help others to help others. Feel good to feel good. Here is a challenge in which you may find an opportunity: don't feel other people's pain, recognize their pain. Rather than internalizing their pain, understand their pain. Help them if they need help. Stay whole. Keep the arrow in the quiver. Don't step in the Empathy Trap.

Please join David Wed, Oct 14, 2020, as he presents a concept focusing on corporate values. He will share his perspective on how values develop, are articulated, and introduced to a company. He will then lead a session that addresses the question: who was responsible for the values. And then will lead a case study where the majority of the employees successfully embraced the values however, one executive was not treating her team according to the values. Her direct reports relate to others in different departments, not according to the behaviors that defined the values. Please join and support David in this engaging work on how values are addressed in the corporate setting.
