Week 2: Get Outside

Week 2: Get Outside

Happy Friday, everyone! ?? This week marked my quarter-century milestone, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's my personal vendetta against the phrase "circadian rhythm." If I hear one more person insist that I need to bask in morning sunlight and turn off my devices by 8 pm, I might just barricade myself indoors forever, alone with my screens in protest.

But, let me borrow a leaf from those I've unnecessarily muted, because let's face it, it's great advice. I've come to appreciate the importance of stepping outside during the day, especially in the morning. I've started my daily commute on my trusty Forest bike, and I must say, it's the best change I've made. I can genuinely feel my serotonin levels rising with every pedal, even if I occasionally engage in a thrilling dance with the 94 bus, leaving me slightly more disheveled than when I started. My once-pristine eco-gelled bun now takes on a similar appearance to the image below.

Another positive change I've embraced is taking meetings outdoors and going for a walk during lunchtime. It's incredibly tempting to stay glued to our desks.

Don't get me wrong; I still find myself scrolling through candidate profiles while devouring my M&S £5 meal deal. However, my newfound resolution is to embark on lunchtime strolls (shoutout to Jessica Lauren Umasuthan for the motivation).

These walks have proven to be invaluable. It's a chance to unwind, chat, and clear our minds from the daily grind. Discussing work or life stressors while strolling under the sun (or London's signature clouds) can lead to surprising solutions. For instance, sharing your concerns about filling a job may result in your walking companion recommending a perfect candidate. Brainstorming sessions in an outdoor setting can work wonders for productivity.

So, my wisdom for this week may be painfully obvious for some, but consider this a friendly nudge to get up and step away from your desk. ?? Whether you choose to have your afternoon meeting outdoors or, in the colder months, find refuge in a cozy cafe, change your environment—it might just change your perspective.
